Going to play my first MTT this coming Friday? Tips??

So, I have only began playing poker about 2 months ago and am not doing that bad. I have been playing mostly small home games $5 buy in with anywhere from 6-10 people. Out of 6 games we played this month, I won 4 of them. I play online a lot for play money and it is pretty random on how I do there. I haven't been keeping track but for the small S&G's with 10 players, I usually make it to the top 3 no problem.

So, a local pool hall usually has a game going on Friday nights. From what I hear it is $15 buy in with about 30 players usually showing up. The prize layout goes to the top 3 (50%, 30%,20%). Nothing serious but a fun time to hang with the boys and have a few drinks. I would like to win or be in the money.

This is my first live MTT and was wondering if anybody had any tips.

How can they legally charge for a poker tourney? Most states won't allow a tournament with a buy in unless you are a casino.

Technically, it is not the actual Pool Hall running the tourney. Basically, a guy rents a few tables for the night and runs his own games. Pool Hall doesent say anything since they sell beer and getting the rental money from the tables.

And I don't live in a state

So maybe it is different in Canada

Oh, didn't notice you were in Canada. Rules may be different up there. Didn't see that.

Usually the tournies at the bars here don't charge. They give out gift certs to the bar for winning. The money they make from sales more than covers what they give out in prizes.

What is the blind structure?

Play tight early, play more aggressive as blinds get high compared to chip stack. If your stack gets to be less than 10 BB, you should almost always fold or go all-in preflop (be wary if someone has raised before you though; use your reads on the player).

I saw a tourney like that at a bar down in Hollywood, FL. They have 'em on sunday nights. It is a small thing, but it seems like a regular event.

I would practice MTTs online. And read/study/learn Harrington on Holdem!

So I played last nite and it wasn't bad. There was 27 people or so and I came third. The final 3 made money so I was happy to be ITM. I was short stack and was out by going all in with AQs and the girl who came first matched me with AKo and lo and behold a K came up. Oh well, it was a good time and I made a few bucks
