Why do people chew gum when working out at the gym?

I have noticed lately that more and more guys are chewing gum when working at the gym. Why is this? Is it possibly a way to relieve stress? I noticed atleast 7 guys chewing gum yesterday. Isn't this a choking hazard waiting to happen? I don't know but I just find this odd.

I have found that I can chew gum AND do other things simultaneously. It's taken a lot of practice, but I've made it, and damn it, I'm proud.

Do you normally go to the gym first thing in the morning? If so, it's probably due to the fact that most people just wake up and go to the gym before they shower and brush their teeth.

To tell you the truth, I don't understand why people chew gum EVER. I just don't 'get' gum. What a waste of chewing, when a mint will accomplish the same thing more easily.

The real question is: Why do people chew gum in public? It's so gross. Especially when they call me and chew into the phone. *shudder* Nothing quite like chewing electronically pumped into your ear.

I recall reading that

Chewing gum stimulates bloodflow to the head. Which could equate to quicker reflexes and so on...

I do because my smoking doesn't go over too well at the gym.

For some reason I get a better work out when chewing gum.... Maybe it started when I smoked, but now can't workout without gum.

And yes, have almost choked on it a couple times.. but thats out of a few thousand workouts. So far still alive..

I get lightheaded when I run inside. Chewing Gum helps solve that problem.

To me it seems like its the "cool" thing to do. Since so many guys are doing it, everyone else is doing it to look cool. That's what I think of it so far.

My mouth gets dry when I use the elliptical or run for a while, so I chew gum to keep my mouth from drying out and getting that cottonmouth feeling. If I'm just lifting weights, though, I just keep a bottle of water handy.

I don't like chewing gum, either. Part of the reason others do it in the gym would be Static's reasoning, as well as a bigger peice would allow them to not grind their teeth when straining.

I get a better work out when I don't chew gum...
Grinding one's teeth together during a lift is definitely bad technique.

I think this is a main reason for people doing weights.. for me, it depends on if I am chewing gum when I walk into the gym or not, and if there is still some decent flavor left.

My High School baseball coach chewed gum 24/7. I think he even did it in his sleep. He did it so vigorously you could see the very defined muscles in the temples of his head.
