What the heck is up with "Micro Heroes"

Maybe you've seen these around the web. They are little cartoon versions of popular characters from nerd culture (comics, sci-fi or fantasy TV shows, G.I. Joe, etc.) with oversized heads and creepy little smiles. Most of them are on geocities or angelfire (because that's apparently just the sort of person who is into them), but here are a few examples from sites that allow hot-linking:

Here's a site with literally a hundred different versions of Spider-Man:

So is anyone here into the Micro-Hero scene? Does someone want to explain to me where these things came from and why people make them?

Using the "Pics" threads as a guide, we need to make us some "Otter Heroes."

They look kinda like the Yahoo avatars... maybe they're used for something like that?

If the heads were much, much bigger, I'd say they were from the Japanese-originated phenomenon called SD: super deformed. As in SD Gundam, where the robots are small with huge heads, though otherwise identical to their regularly proportioned counterparts.

There are less than a hundred versions of Spider-Man on that site. I feel lied to.

D'oh!

I tried to do a quick estimate and guessed that there were between 100 and 110 versions. Turns out there were only 74. The moral of the story is don't ask me to estimate things.
