"Fancy" Ketchup?

Why are some ketchups "fancy" while other are not?

My question is this: When I was in the UK last summer I saw this stuff everywhere. What the hell is Brown Sauce?

This thread reminds me of the halloween my roommates and I had a big bowl of condiment packets for the trick or treaters. Good times.

Actually, Venusian's answer is wrong.

These are agricultural commodity grade names. There's fancy ketchup, fancy corn, USDA #1, Grade A, Extra Fancy, and a whole lot more.

For example, this is what you have to do to have a "fancy" cucumber:

Does anybody remember around the mid 90's they marketed an actual "fancy" ketchup? I can't recall the name of it, but it came in a glass bottle and was supposed to be the Dijon mustard of Ketchup, like something they were trying to hook on to the gourmet crowd? I bought one bottle, deemed it overrated, and I am taking most consumers felt the same as me, as it vanished pretty quick.

But the best trend in ketchup? COLORED KETCHUP! I miss my purple ketchup!

I thought they still had colored ketchup...

And I'm sure they still have "gourmet" ketchup. I might want to try some, I'm tired of the syrup+vinegar that is Heinz.

As far as I know, Heinz discontinued it's "Ez Squirt" line of colored ketchups a couple of years ago. They made Purple, Green and a normal Red color and they were all enhanced with Vitamin C for kids.

From the Heinz FAQ:

Does Heinz still make EZ Squirt Colored Ketchup?
No. While very popular with consumers for a few years, Heinz is not currently producing colored ketchup products.

To add, I know it was supposed to taste the same, but I swear the purple ketchup tasted better. Could have been a psychological thing. And what else would you eat your blue french fries with!

I think I still have some blue butter left. Not sure if it's good anymore, but I have a little left in the back of the refrigerator. That stuff ruled to make true green eggs and ham!

"Real tomato ketchup, Eddie?"
"Nothin' but the best."

Forget the colored ketchup, I miss the one spiked with garlic.
