Mother stabs children over 200 times as they try to fight her off

Mother Arrested in Slaying of Her Children
Friday, April 29, 2005

•Boy, Little Sister Stabbed to Death at Home

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — A woman accused of stabbing her two young children more than 200 times as they tried to fight her off was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder.

A heavy bandage covered Tonya Vasilev's left wrist and hand as she stood in court Friday afternoon and answered the judge's questions in a soft, shaking voice. The judge appointed a public defender to represent her and ordered her held without bail.

Assistant State's Attorney Richard Karwaczka (search) described for the court the scene that Vasilev's husband found when he and a friend walked into the family's suburban Chicago home around 9:20 Wednesday night.

In the kitchen, Nikolai Vasilev spotted his 9-year-old son, Christian, lying on the floor in a pool of blood, Karwaczka said. The father scooped him up and carried him to the front door, where he frantically called 911. Then he and the friend started up the stairs.

At the top of the stairs, they found the Vasilevs' 3-year-old daughter, Grace, dead from stab wounds, the prosecutor said.

"Right next to Grace was the defendant, Tonya, sitting there with a knife," he said.

Boy, Little Sister Stabbed to Death at Home

Thursday, April 28, 2005

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — As authorities questioned the parents of two young children found stabbed to death in their home, investigators in a nearby community were taking another look Thursday at a fire that had killed the children's infant sister five years earlier.

The children's mother was home Wednesday night when 9-year-old Christian Vasilev (search) and his 3-year-old sister Gracie were attacked, Hoffman Estates (search) Police Lt. Rich Russo said. He said their father arrived later and called 911.

"We are not looking for anybody else at this point in time," Russo said as authorities questioned Nikolai Vasilev (search), 36, and Tonya Vasilev, 34, on Thursday.

No charges had been filed Thursday afternoon, but Russo said one person had been taken into custody. He would not say who or provide further details.

The stabbings came shortly before the five-year anniversary of a house fire that killed the couple's 3-month-old daughter Gabrielle. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but foul play was never suspected, said Elk Grove Village Police Deputy Chief Larry Hammar. One potential cause considered then was that the clothes dryer malfunctioned.

Tonya Vasilev had left her daughter in an infant carrier in the laundry room of the home while she went to check on another of her children and noticed smoke coming from the window a short time later, according to Elk Grove Village police.

She ran back into the home, but was forced out by a neighbor trying to save her, Hammar said. He said when officers arrived, they tried to get in the house, but were turned back by the smoke and intense heat.

"She ran right in after they left and two of our guys had to run back in after her," he said.

Neither parent was ever consider a suspect in that fire. But Hammar said Thursday that the stabbing deaths had prompted the Elk Grove Village department to investigate the fire again.

It was around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday when Hoffman Estates police were called to the Vasilevs' home, a white two-story house on a cul de sac about 30 miles west of Chicago. Russo would not discuss details of what they found when they arrived but said both children had been stabbed to death. He said police recovered several knives in the home believed to be the murder weapons.

At Schaumburg Christian School, where Christian was in third grade, counselors were available to talk with students Thursday. Principal Randy Thaxton said the school planned to notify parents so they could help their children cope rather than announce the tragedy to the boy's classmates.

This has, not surprisingly, been all over the news here in Chicago.

Apparently, the mother had another child who died in a house fire a few years ago. At the time, it was ruled an accidental fire, but now they're taking another look to see if it was arson.

Strong agreement....preferrably with about 400 stabs, and only the very last one bring upon her death.

Insanity defense is such BS. Yeah, most people that murder other human beings aren't quite sane at the time. Doesn't take away from the fact that the victims are dead.

I remember an episode of Law & Order that sort of reminds me of this. It just aired in syndication last week. It had to do with a mother that killed her children. She wanted to be seen as a victim, and be pitied by people. Although in this case, it is obvious that the two children's deaths were not accidental. Apparently there really is some kind of syndrome that leads some women to kill their children in order to get attention.

Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Usually they just make their children sick but the kids can, of course, die. It's not limited to women although it is women in the vast majority of cases.

Just because she is charged does not mean she is guilty. why are we condeming her without a trial?

Well, this is a pretty convincing reason to assume she's guilty:
At the top of the stairs, they found the Vasilevs' 3-year-old daughter, Grace, dead from stab wounds, the prosecutor said.

"Right next to Grace was the defendant, Tonya, sitting there with a knife," he said.
Even if she didn't do it, why wasn't she calling 911 by that point?

Assuming she didn't do it, that means either she left the children alone and first stumbled upon the stabbed son, then made her way upstairs to find the stabbed daughter, then picked up the knife and sat there in shock (and didn't call 911) until her husband got home.

Or, she was home with her children, and somehow a murderer broke in, killed both her children in two seperate areas of the house, left the mother unharmed, and then left the house - With the mother still not calling 911 at this point.

C'mon.. we all know "Innocent until proven guilty." But when the given evidence from the articles adds up, it's pretty damn safe to assume she did it.
