That happend to someone I know. They caught it in time. evidently they opened the hood and the battery was swelled up like a watermellon!

If you cross the cables when charging it, they say its like a stick of dynamite. Id feel lucky to come out without a scratch if I were you!

It's been said before, but capitalization is the difference between:

I helped my Uncle Jack off a horse yesterday.

and

I helped my uncle jack off a horse yesterday.

That happened to me one time as I was jump starting my car. I was leaning in at the time with the hood up and the battery exploded in my face.
Lucky that I was wearing sunglasses so the acid did not get into my eyes. But it did get on my face and all over my shirt and arms. This happened in the parking lot of a restaurant I was working at, so I went inside to wash off and get a new shirt. I still have a small scar on one hand from it but that was about the only injury I suffered.

The thing did go off like a bomb, and scared the shit out of me. We found hunks of the battery that were blasted all over the parking lot.

I know I did not have the wires crossed. A spark may have ignited acid that was already leaking or somehow otherwise caused it to blow.

For quite some time afterward I had a phobia about jumping car batteries. People would ask me to help and I would have to decline.

The same thing happened to me, I got in my car turned it on and BAM! The people a couple spaces down heard it was well. I opened up my hood and pieces of the battery were lying all over the compartment and there was battery acid all over the inside of the hood. Thankfully a new battery was all it took to repair the damage.

When batteries are charged (especially overcharged), they give off hydrogen. There is a catalyst to recombine the hydrogen, but if it can't keep up, the pressure builds up, and hydrogen is explosive when mixed with oxygen. A spark makes a nice boom.
