Brain teaser to kill some time...

To kill some time, try this: a brain puzzle game; the instructions are in japanese so here is a basic rundown of the rules. It is possible, just takes a while.

Click on link below, then click on the blue circle. Use the rules below.

"Everybody
has to cross the river".

The following rules apply:

Only 2 persons on the raft at a time

The father can not stay with any of the daughters without their mother's
presence

The mother can not stay with any of the sons without their father's
presence

The thief (striped shirt) can not stay with any family member if the
Policeman is not there

Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the
raft

To move the people click on them. To move the raft click on the pole on
the
opposite side of the river

http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf

To start click on the big blue circle on the right.

Sounds like the classic wolf, chicken, grain river crossing puzzle. (which in turn was an offshoot of the Towers of Hanoi puzzle)

So... uh... why is that?

Pretty clever game. Solved in maybe five minutes, but I'm used to these sorts of puzzles.

Hints:
Spoiler:
In addition to the rules given, remember that the following movements are all valid and helpful:

The guard can do more than ferry the prisoner back and forth - he can also ferry over the children.

You can't leave the prisoner with any family member without the guard present, but you can leave the prisoner alone on one side of the beach.

Remember that whenever you send the raft over, you'll have to get it back somehow. Sometimes it's helpful to send two adults across at the same time, so that one can stay and the other can carry it back.

Walkthrough:
Spoiler:
Over: Guard and Prisoner
Back: Guard
Over: Guard and Boy
Back: Guard and Prisoner
Over: Mom and Boy
Back: Mom
Over: Mom and Dad
Back: Dad
Over: Guard and Prisoner
Back: Mom
Over: Mom and Dad
Back: Dad
Over: Dad and Girl
Back: Guard and Prisoner
Over: Guard and Girl
Back: Guard
Over: Guard and Prisoner
Might not be optimal, but it works fine.

Did you try it? Apparently, Mom will happily punch her sons in the face without Dad present to keep an eye on her. It's a pretty screwed up family. I say have the cop cross the river and let the robber have his way with the rest of them.

Uhh...yeah...that walkthrough doesn't work. The
Spoiler:
Dad can't come back over after mom and dad have gone over.

EDIT: Oh wait, no it's the mom that comes back after both of them have gone over. I think you've got the mom and dad mixed up. The mom is the one with purple hair.

I've despoilerized your walkthrough right up to the point where it stops working. Mom and Boy can't cross together because Mom will apparently try to kill Boy if Dad's not watching her.

Why doesn't the robber just run away, when you leave her alone?

That was pretty cool. Although a variation on classic problems, it was a little more difficult because of the strict definition of "cannot stay" and the assumption that people have to get off the raft. Took me two tries. It didn't immediately occur to me to
Spoiler:
use the Guard/Thief to bring the Mom back. I originally tried with the Dad and quickly realized that was a failure.

Oh - yeah - thanks for fixing it, guys. I actually ran through the list once and ensured that it worked. I'm having gender issues.

I hope it's just with the game and not in real life. I don't think you would want to hit on Earl the 300lb mechanic.

We need more father-father action in our rafting game.

I've concluded that none of your hints/walkthroughs/solutions work. Those of you who claim to have made it cheated somehow, or simply created photoshop pics of everyone on the other side of the river. This is an impossible game with no solution, and I am now going to the doctor to get some Prozac.
