Singer of US anthem has issues

NEW YORK (AP) -- By the dawn's early light, Caroline Marcil finally finished on national TV what she started at a hockey game -- a flawless rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.

The Montreal singer was to perform the national anthems of two countries before the United States' 5-4 exhibition victory over Canada on Friday in Quebec City.

Despite two tries, she forgot the words to the U.S. anthem and then left to get the lyrics. When she returned to the rink, she slipped on the carpet covering the ice and plopped on her back before a Quebec Coliseum crowd of 7,166.

After lying motionless for a few seconds, the 24-year-old Canadian left on her own and the game began without either anthem sung.

Marcil regrouped over the weekend, when she was invited to appear on ABC's Good Morning America, where she sang the entire U.S. anthem without a hitch. Marcil said the pressure before the game got to her.

"It was a lot of things together, the emotion, the stress," she said, adding that the crowd's booing made things worse.

"That made me completely blank," she said.

On Monday, she was on the ABC show again, and explained why she needed to return to the ice.

"I wanted to do it," she said in accented English. "And to show I was able to do it. I go get my words and -- I'm going to do this song. I have to."

The video is hilarious. She forgets the words, leaves, comes back with words on paper and slips. The look on her face as she's on the ice is priceless, like a kid beginning to cry, then she gets up and leaves again. Not saying that my reaction wouldn't have been the same, but funny still.

You know, at this point I wouldn't mind one bit if the National Anthem singer came out with the lyrics in hand. Choirs do it all the time. I would prefer that to people forgetting the lyrics midway.....

Perhaps if we left singing the National Anthem to Americans,
they wouldn't forget the words. (I hope she can sing "Oh Canada" without the words.)

it'd also be nice to have it have the notes, so that they didn't sign off key or put in those damn fluctuations

yeah but the best part is when they do a close up of the area where the girl is crying, there's a tall guy with his finger over his mouth clearly trying his best not bust up laughing.

That's a nightmare, to mess up in front of a big crowd and then fall ass over teakettle. She laid there for a second like she wasn't planning on getting up again until everyone went home.

Rather impractical unless every hockey team starts travelling with their own singer. Of course they could have hired Roseanne Barr.

Yes, this is all politically motivated.

She forgot the words, I'm glad that in all your many years you've never gotten nervous.

This is why we need to have Maurice Cheeks start attending more sporting events.
