Google does it again with free satellite maps

Google purchased the company Keyhole, and now provides their very detailed maps for free. Just trying it out it seems a lot more user-friendly than some of the other map sites. Just put in the address you want to search for, then click the "Satellite" link on the top-right.

their map site without the satellite is still easier to use than other map sites. you can drag the map around - really cool

Definitely easier. You can also drag the satellite maps around, which I've never seen before.

This is awesome. I love the drag option... and I just zoomed all the way in to Boston and the level of detail on the satellite pic is pretty damn good.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my first post. Somewhere around the second sentence...

holy crap, there's my house!
See, there I am waving.

Quite cool, yet somewhat disturbing; and a whole lot more user-friendly and easier to navigate than any other sat/map site I've found.

*laugh* if you type in a specific address in the Google search field, there will be a little popup box on the map, that points to your selection--the box casts a shadow on the map

I've used KeyHole before and it provides more "zoom" or detail than what GoogleMaps is showing now (enough that when viewing my grandparents' house, I was able to see my grandpas's truck pulling into the driveway).

I wonder if that detail will eventually be available.

I'm just getting a very thin map at the top of the page. I can't find anyway to make it any larger. What am I doing wrong?

Can you view this? (And extra credit to the first person who can guess what stadium this is)

Pictures are alteast half a year old, probably more like a year. I can tell by the lot at 8th and Jst sacramento ca. It shows a building that has since been torn down and new construction built.

Whats weird is that when this was in Beta the detail was much much higher for my house.

I could see that my neighbors have a pool, and in SF that's a rarity

November, 2002 to be exact. The Keyhole website has dates for each of the areas they have maps for. Go to the main site and click "Images and Dates" in the top-right corner.

If you let it give you directions from one point to another, it will give you all the turns and such on the right hand side. If you click on one of the numbers it will give a pop-up on the map which shows the detail, and you can switch that little pop-up between satellite and map. Sweet!

How did you manage to get a link for the specific location? For the life of me I can't do it!
