Civics can really go 140mph

http://koin.com/news.asp?ID=1908

A 19-year-old was pulled over doing 142 mph on Interstate 205 about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police say.
Ryan Champ told KOIN News 6 that he wasn't racing but simply wanted to see how fast his car would go. He claims that he was in control the whole time.

He spent the night in jail for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. KOIN reporter Dan DeRoos caught up with Champ Wednesday when he was picking up his car from an impound lot.

"That's the first time I've ever gone fast on the freeway," he said.

About 10 minutes after the interview, Champ, still with a suspended license, drove his car from the lot (pictured).

According to OSP records, it's the second-highest documented speed violation stopped by a trooper. Champ faces one year in jail and more than $6,000 in fines.

I got an 80s toyota tercel hatchback with 3 guys in it going 120 in the desert on the way home from Vegas once. It was dumb because if the thing had blown a tire, we'd all die. The car had an upgrade from 4 gears to 5 gears.

The speedo on my Nissan 240SX only goes up to 120mph. And I've buried the needle on it a couple times going to Vegas or San Francisco on those long straight stretches of highway. I've done 130mph in a Honda Accord.

I think 6000 dollars is a bit much. I bet he would have had a less fee for driving drunk.

I wonder if the cot in that jail cell was more or less comfortable than his half of the bunkbed...

The $6000 + in fines come from speed, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. He dropped a Prelude engine in his Civic and claimed that he topped 150 and would do it again just not "here".

more here

Come on, man. Didn't you know that the Civic was Honda's answer to the 911 Carrera?

Oh, and those squirrily little Subaru roadsters I hate so much...those were Subaru's answer to the latest Ferrari.

I've gone 110 in my Honda CRX fully bogged down with a bike on the back... and I eased off the pedals because I was freaked out . This is was in Montana though.... so I wasn't breaking the speed limit.

my truck tops out at like 80, but I've had my 68 mustang going 120 on a two-lane stretch of road. Wasn't there something in the 80s or early 90s where they were producing cars that the spedometer wouldn't go above like 90mph?

I love my 93 Civic...Bought it new then and to this day it purrs like a kitten...156k miles. Although when I bought it I was 19 and I am now 31 and my joints are starting to creak getting in and out of it.

However I'll stick with 70-75 on the highway

120 is the fastest I've gotten a honda to go. Then came the crashing and the broken bones.

Thanks Tandem, I thought it was somewhat clever.

No love from the rest of the Otters, though.

There's a difference between going 140mph in a vehicle that feels like it is going to rattle and bust into a thousand pieces and going 140mph in a car designed to go 140 mph. Get an Acura, not a Honda.

I agree. Yesterday I had my car in the shop for an alignment, and had a rental for the day. It was a small Nissan, don't know which one, perhaps a Sentra. Anyway, at 70mph the damn thing felt like I was going 120 in my car. Also, the noise-reduction is such that cars whizzing by at 72 sound very loud. Finally, there was such little power that merging onto a freeway is terrifying. The reflector bumps that divide the lanes felt like speedbumps under the little tires on this car.

I'll think twice before flying up on such a small car again, as I probably terrify those people whenever I do that.

He also had no insurance (insurance is required in Oregon). However, the $6,250 fine (and up to one year in jail) maximum is only for the reckless driving. The other charges will be more.

Very true. My current car is governed to 127mph. At that speed, it is quite smooth. Driving even 90mph in my old jeep was scary.

I did 125, easily, when driving back from Vegas to SD while in college. It was an old '97 Civic DX, no mods at all.
