How do you and your spouse deal with bonuses from work?

Do you let the person who earned it spend it all?
Divide it up?
Pay off bills?

Go to Vegas?

Since I'm not married, I get to spend my bonuses on hookers & beer.

Usually take a small portion of it, and buy a "fun item" that the person wants. She just got a new set of luggage with her bonus, and I'm getting a used G4 Mac with mine.

I get all excited about finishing off my MST3K or Star Trek DVD collections, it gets direct deposited to the checking account, we have to use a little for some kind of bills or something, and slowly it gets whittled away, leaving me bitter and angry.

My bonus (which this year was quite sizable) goes completely to my wife. The rationale behind this is that once she finishes school with a minimum of debt, she will start raking in the dough and then a sizable portion of that will go to me

I seem to have neglected to mention the one I got last year to her...

Probably too late to do that now, I guess.

We usually just put it in our checking account for general use or buy furniture.

She puts 25% or so towards savings in different areas and gets to spend the rest. Which is fine, since that's about the only money she spends on clothes, ever.

I don't get bonuses. I think there are pills for that now.

Mine goes into the general household budget. We live below our means. We regularly treat ourselves to "non-essentials"... so when we receive a lump sum of cash, we don't have this pent up desire to splurge.

I don't get bonuses, but sometimes get a huge pay day. I generally just put it in savings. Watching savings grow gives me a When it gets to a certain amount, I decide if we should do something grand, or pay off a rental. We generally pay off a rental. Not as satisfying, but I am into delayed gratification.

I don't get bonuses, but when my wife gets one it usually goes to bills or to something to improve our home.

I try to take half in company stock (yes I have that option), then half in cash. Taxes for all of it come out of the cash half. Whatever is leftover goes right into savings.

I look at the bonus as "money I don't need to live" and save it up for when the time comes that I do need it to live

I get my bonus a week from Tuesday. Back in the day, that meant I could buy myself a new toy. Now the wife uses it to pay bills.

No bonus here however I consider OT pay as a bonus as it doesn't really require any energy to do it. I put it towards big household items, like a lawn tractor and this week is for a shed. When no large purchases I split it 50% to the wife who uses it for the both of us and my 50% on myself.

I work in IT. I haven't gotten a bonus in quite a few years. But when I did they usually came around tax time and that's where it went (real estate and income).

Ever worry about if she will leave you once she is making more money or when she no longer needs you to pay for her schooling?

It depends on who got the bonus.
We put half my year-end bonus aside for taxes and saving, then a quarter of it for a family trip, and the last quarter we split.
My wife's bonus is smaller ( I think it was only $2500 last year), so we put that into savings.
We think of it as planting 'money trees'

I try to restrain hubby from spending the whole thing! Usually, we will spend 1/2 on something fun and the other half on someone not so fun (like taxes or a new dishwasher)
