Anyone been to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium?

Was looking at little one day vacations events and was wondering if Shedd is really worth $24 a person to visit it?

Yes, but not since 1990. They were in the middle of improvements when I was there last but, at the time, I wouldn't have said it was worth anywhere near $24.

I've been a few times. It's a nice aqaurium but I would look for discounts. It's very very dark from what I remember. Try and go when they feed the sharks that was intersting to watch.

I go there all the time with my kids, it's absolutely excellent (probably the best aquarium I've been to) but I'm not sure it's worth 24 bucks. If you have to pick one thing to see in Chicago, save your money and go to the Art Institute...you won't believe the collection they have.

Last time I went was around 1990 as well. They have a huge tank for the dolphins that is pretty cool. The rest of it is pretty dark.

I'd say not really worth $24 though. I enjoyed the U boat they have on display down the street more at the science one.

It's only $8 to get into the aquarium; $23 includes the special exhibit areas.

I went about a year and a half ago, and I don't remember paying $24. It was fun, but not worth $24.

There are different ticket prices. There is the aquarium (which is cheap) consisting of several arms of small tanks of fish/turtles/etc around a really big center tank with sharks, mantas, and big fish.

Then there is the oceanarium which is where the seahorse display and dolphins and otters and other larger scale fish/mammals are.

Then there is the shark experience which is basically a walk through reef.

IIRC you pay seperately for each part. The aquarium is cheap but I don't find it that interesting. However, you have to pay to get into it to see any of the other sections. I can live without the dolphins (It's what I'd cut if I didn't have enough time) although I do enjoy the otters and seahorses, but the shark experience is pretty neat but if you want to do that you want to get there wearly as tickets sell out hours in advance and it can get really really crowded which ruins it.

I've been to some good aquariums and I thought the Shedd Aquarium was a great aquarium. Better than any I've been to but the Monterey Bay Aquarium, however it's a very different kind.

The Shark exhibit is the one that costs the most, and isn't really worth it. The rest of the aquarium is very cool though. If you know someone in Chicago, there are family passes available at local libraries for residents that will get you into everything but the sharks for free. That's what we did last November, and the kids LOVED it. Highly recommended. They have a couple of Beluga whales that are really neat in addition to the dolphin show.

Don't waste money on the shark exhibit. It blows. I was extremely underwhelmed.

I love all the comments on the aquarium being dark.

All aquariums are dark. Aquariums are SUPPOSED to be dark.

wow, I went there once but like many of the others it was probably around 1992 or so. I remember it being a nice aquarium but like the other said very very dark.

I was there two years ago. I don't remember what we paid, but we were able to spend a good 6 hours there without getting bored.

The tank show is really good, and in an edutainment way, not babes in bikinis on the noses of killer whales way.

There are a lot of other things to do right in that area- lunch along the lake, Field Museum, etc.

There's a lawyer joke in there somewhere.
