I'm getting my last tattoo.....

I'm in the process of getting what I "think" will
be the last tattoo that I get. I have full arm sleeve
plus my whole chest and one on my leg.

After being on the waiting list for four years, I'm getting Samoan tattoo called a pea’a .

The tattoo runs starts at the middle of your back, everything
in between (except the balls and penis) and ends
just below your knee.

It's going to take about 14-15 days to complete as you must
rest between days as they complete a full area at one time with each session running anywhere from 3 to 6 hours
and you must rest between sessions as the swelling is very bad.

Thursday my back was completed and Saturday my buttocks
and Tuesday they will start on my stomach.

I have to take eight showers a day and on my off days a person
massages the tattoo for about a hour and before I go to sleep
a very thin application of Neosporin is applied..

The tattoo is being done by master tattoo artist Sulu'ape Petelo
from Apia. three assistants work with him to wipe blood,
stretch the skin and attimes, hold you down as it's very painful.

The only serious pain that I experienced (please forgive the details!) was when they tattooed Inside the crack of my butt cheeks but the most painful part of the tattoo is supposed to be your belly button and that is done on the final day of the tattoo.

While the tattoo is being done in the traditional way, the tools
are sterilized in a autoclave and the artist wears gloves as many
artists in Samoa, Apia and new Zealand do not utilize and the
infection and death rate are high.

The whole thing is costing me about $3,000 plus a daily
offering for the artist, cigs, food and if you tattoo on a Saturday, a case of beer as Sunday is their day off.

I'll post a link at a later time for anyone interested in the
progression of the tattoo as my family is taking pics
and videotaping.

There are a total of eight of us getting the tattoo, two
people at a time as Samoan culture dictates that two people
must "share the pain"

Here is a pics of the tools:

And a pic of Sulu'ape at work:

The only thing that's getting me through this is and it may
sound corny to some but is my belief in god and prayer
and a bit of vicodin.

Forgive my long post as I really can't do anything else
due to the pain.

That's nothing compared to when I had the inside of my penis and tattooed... I also had 3 feet of lower intestine tattooed to resemble the vegas strip. They used special ink so you can only see it under black light and of course with an invasive type of camera contraption. It wasn't as painful as the tattoo on the inside of my penis, but it took longer to complete.

Oh - the tattoo on the inside of my penis is of the outside of my penis.

The pictures didn't work for me, but I am very interested in your work. I know lots about tattoos, all of my friends tattooed and a few of them are tattoo artists. I know what the pea'a tattoos look like and they are definitely awesome. So it's being done with a machine, or tebori style? Also where are you going to get it done?

Ok, I didn't read anything past this, but I have to say that you're screen name is the worst movie in the history of movies.

To be fair, the mods changed his screen name to "videodrome" from "Battlefield Earth."

It's being done the traditional tools but the
"teeth" of the tools are made custom <a href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=11&k=stainless%20steel" ***********="window.status='stainless steel'; return true;" **********="window.status=''; return true;">stainless
steel</a> so they can be sterilized.

The "real" traditional tools would have been made
with wild boar tusk affixed to turtle shell and the
"teeth" would have been sharpened with coral.

Candle nut would have been traditionally used as the base for
the ink but the ink used now is custom mixed based on
you skin color.

I'm getting the tattoo done in Honolulu. I would have
loved to travel to Apia to get it done but it would be
hard to get medical care if I got a infection.

My 9th tattoo was back around 2000/2001 but I'm not done yet. I love the whole experience of getting tats. Thinking of a design, having the artist tweak the image before skin prep, the skin prep, feeling the needle inking the skin.... Awesome!

My 7th was around then-but I already have plans for more. Just a matter of time really. And i like the whole experience too-especially the picking a design.
