What is there to do in LA during a 5 day trip?
I might be making a trip out there in September, what are some things to do/see during the trip, good areas to stay without paying an arm and a leg for a hotel room? Somewhere fairly close to the LA Coliseum but in a good neighborhood, if possible
are cabs easy to find? No way in Hell am I driving in any big city if I can avoid it(I hate driving in traffic), certainly not in one I've never been to before.
What about earthquakes and stuff or is the risk only in Northen California?

Tons of stuff to do, but it depends if you are actually going to Los Angeles the city, or just the approximate area.
It's HUGE.
Since I live about 130 miles north, I don't know if I am the most knowledgable person about stuff to do in LA, since I only go about once a year, but you can pretty much find anything you want there.
If you like burgers, try Tommy's Burgers The one on Beverly Blvd near Dodger stadium is the first and best location.
My mom likes this place.
Sunset Blvd is a great place to be, but it can be dangerous to be a pedestrian.
I can't believe I'm the first reply in this thread. By tomorrow night you should have plenty of feedback, and by September should have enough suggestions for a 5 month vacation much less a 5 day one.

Earthquakes shouldn't be a problem, it isn't like we have a big one every day or anything, though we haven't had a big one in a while, so we are due....
What kinds of things are you interested in doing? Is this a family trip or just yourself? There are always a bunch of good studio tours (WB, Paramount, Universal, etc). The beach is an obvious one, and it should still be fairly warm in Sept, so don't discount that. Hollywood and Highland is a nice place to waddle around for an afternoon, because Mann's Chinese is right there and the Kodak Theater as well, where the Oscars are held. You might also look into what is going on at the Staples Center for the time you are here, catching a sporting event there is pretty easy if you plan ahead.
And Jack is right, there are plenty of nice areas to stay; the one around the Coliseum is not the right one.

As for what to do:
Melrose ave has a lot of strange shops and some good sights to see
Hollywood/highland will be the generic place you go for that "Hollywood" feel
Universal City walk is a pretty decent place to go in the evening.
Disneyland of course
Eat at pinks Hotdogs while you are around Melrose.
Go to Santa Monica/Venice area for beach experience
Drive through the Hollywood hills.
See Moca
Go to little tokyo
Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood for the night life, plenty of taxi's there.
Go to Long Beach for the fuck of it
Arclight theaters. nuff said
Walk around the ever so dead WestWood night life
The Block of orange
Get a DVDTALK meet going and meet us freaks.
I'm sure there's been threads like this before.

There are a lot of threads that give good advice.
If you want to be (somewhat) close to the coloseum, but in a good area, there isn't much unless you want to stay in downtown. Try the bonaventure or wilshire grand. Personally I would stay elsewhere.
oh yeah, plan on driving. See if you can borrow a thomas guide from someone.

I get white knuckles (so to speak) in heavy traffic, I'd rather avoid that.
Also is Yosemite National Park a reasonable distance? Always wanted to vistit there. Also tell me about San Diego.

King's Canyon and Sequoia Natl Park are great! Also Big Sur is beautiful, a Natl Park on the coast. Death Valley is doable in a day. and there's also the Channel Islands, only 90 miles from LA.
FinkPish, do you remember where that drive-in was? I might try to hit it next time I go back there.
