When folks on Ebay get bored..

It all started when David Chu (an employee on Ebay) posted his photo on a link that described how to increase visibility for Ebay Stores..

http://pages.ebay.com/community/chat...Name=CMDV:ICIN

Who in the world is David Chu?

Mon Feb 21,11:01 AM ET

EBAY MARKETING EXPERT DEIFIED BY ONLINE TREASURE HUNTERS WHO MAY BE A LITTLE LOOPY

By Michael Bazeley, Mercury News

David Chu probably never saw it coming.

One day, he's a mild-mannered search-engine marketing expert for eBay.

The next, he's a pop icon on the Internet, with T-shirts, posters, wall clocks, model trains and more bearing his name and likeness.

``Take the eBay Hottie home!'' screamed one message posted Thursday on eBay's discussion boards. ``David Chu is hot!'' said another. Still another: ``Oh my God. Now I've totally and completely lost it. I just put David Chu's pic up as my desktop background.''

Chu's fame was entirely accidental. It's related to an eight-day treasure hunt that eBay is promoting on its Web site. EBay staffers are posting clues on the site to hidden merchandise auction listings, and lucky eBay users who find them win $1,000.

Chu's photo happened to be posted alongside a treasure-hunt discussion board, with a link to an advice article he had written about how eBay store owners can improve their visibility in search-engine results.

Chu has nothing to do with the treasure hunt. But treasure hunters -- bored, frustrated and a little loopy from waiting for new clues -- soon began to take notice of his stoic mug shot staring out at them from their computer screens.

``Suddenly someone posted `David Chu Winked at Me,' '' said Lori Barnhurst, a 22-year-old Utah mom who is selling a David Chu T-shirt on eBay. ``It kind of went snowballing from there. Some people started saying how they thought he was cute.''

Added Barnhurst: ``It was late. We were tired. We probably should have just all gone to bed.''

Over 500 messages have been posted on the eBay discussion boards about Chu since Wednesday. And his fame has spawned dozens of merchandise listings -- everything from an ``authentic David Chu stapler'' and a soda can he supposedly once used to a ``Chu Guevara'' poster and a grilled cheese sandwich emblazoned with his picture.

One person claiming to be an eBay employee started an auction for an autographed photo of Chu. Through Friday evening, 21 bids had driven the price up to nearly $44. Another recommended that eBay rename itself ``Chubay.''

Chu, who works at the company's San Jose headquarters, did not return our phone call seeking comments. But an eBay spokesman said he and his colleagues are having fun with the sudden fame.

``You never know what will capture the imagination of the eBay community,'' spokesman Hani Durzy said. ``People here are laughing about it.''

Chu's fame will no doubt be fleeting.

But at least when David Chu mania is over, we'll have these song lyrics, penned by a fan and sung to the tune of the Olivia Newton John hit ``Physical.''

``Let's meet David Chu, David Chu . . .

I wanna meet David Chu, Let's hear from David Chu . . .

Not to be confused with Pikachu . . .

No he's not a little yellow Pikachu.''

That explains about 90% of the Internet.
