Should I report this? If so, to who?

I went to an appointment yesterday to fix some dude's computers. I get there and as I'm fixing them I look around his living room and there's porn everywhere. Not like cut out of magazines or posters on the walls, but 5x7s of girls naked in picture frames... like they were family photos or something. The thing is - alot of these girls looked far too young - like underdeveloped. All this ameture tween porn all over his walls in frames and in frames on his bookshelf and on his desk and everywhere. This guy was probably in his 40s or older and he was an ugly disgusting smelly fat pig... not even a pear shaped body, but more like a hershey's kiss shape. I got this really creepy 'internet predator' vibe off this experience and I got the fuck out of there as fast as I could. I called the local police non-emergency and they put me on hold for too long so I just hung up. I really don't know who I should be calling or what I should tell them or even if I should meddle.

THe pictures looked like he was chatting up some teenage girls on aol and getting them to send him pictures... or maybe he was meeting with them and taking pictures of them himself and giving them money? I don't know. Or maybe he does ameture porn for a living and all the girls are of age. They didn't look it, but you never know. I didn't see anything so obvious like some 8 year olds or anything. I'm just really creeped out. He also had dozens of cd-rs he said were full of photos. I know he's on AOL alot because of how protective he was of it when I suggested he use something else. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't report it unless I saw clear evidence of child pornography. You'd have to be plenty fucking stupid to have kiddie porn on your walls, which is why I doubt he's for real - but on the other hand, there are just some dumb people.

Flip a coin.

Report it for sure. If it's nothing, at least you know you were concerned.

I already know I'm concerned... reporting it doesn't change that. I mean, really - I have no proof. Assuming they are all of age, it's still pretty creepy. I didn't see any women near his age naked on the walls. There were no family photos at all, just naked internet girls.

I don't know who that is, but they were all different girls from what I could tell. It was like something out of a movie set... the home of the deranged psychopath perv.

I would call the police and just tell them what you told us. They can decide if it sounds like enough to go on. I would hate to do nothing, and find out the guy is luring underage girls into things.

Should've thrown VNC or something on his PC, so you could confirm your suspicions from the safety of your own home.

It's a tough call.

You don't have any actual proof, and you may be ruining this guy's reputation over nothing... and (I may be wrong) but couldn't he sue you for damages if it turns out to be false?

On the other hand, I hate the thought of this guy (if he's really guilty) doing things like this to children.

I'd still find it hard to believe that someone would have this stuff a) plastered on his walls and b) allow people to see it without any concern. The guy may be a moron - but that would seem utterly retarded.

Perhaps you can make an excuse to visit his computer again (free of charge so he doesn't say no) and try to get more evidence from his computer (pics, etc... back them up somewhere... or throw on some monitoring software).
Not sure how easy/hard that would be if he's watching you while you're working on the computer.

Was this porn (sexually explicit) or just pictures of naked girls/women? Nude photos and porn are certainly not the same thing.

As creepy as it seems, there doesn't seem to be enough to go to the police with.

If you could though, try to find out what his AIM name is and try a "perverted-justice"-type sting.

if you were that uncomfortable, i'd definitely call the police and tell them exactly that and let them decide. you don't want to assume somebody is doing something illegal, but you got a weird vibe and just want to make sure. make an anonymous call if you feel you need to.

or go here and see if he's registered.

there's always this option.

Is it possible to use VNC in this manner? I've seen it used on a network but the icon shows up in the taskbar.

Anywho... it is a tough call because if you talked to the police and they acted on it, he'd know (or at least have a good idea) who called them. On the other hand, if he really is a pedophile (albeit a moronic one) then you did a great service.

I spent 11 years with a police agency... they go on calls with a lot less to go on than this...

You absolutely need to report this.

Amen to that. Unless there are sexual acts and/or lacivious display of the genitals, even if some of the girls are under 18, it is not child pornography. Posed nude pictures do not qualify unless the girls are "showing pink" for the camera, the camera angle is focused on their vagina (not their pubic hair) or something similar like that. I have worked on several child pornography investigations in my current job so I, sadly, know the distinction by heart. Of course, that's the federal definition. It is possible, although unlikely, that there is some superceding local ordinance that is applicable here.

This is one of those rare instances where I tend to agree with Parcher. Unless there are pictures of girls who are clearly under the age of 18 and the pictures meet the definition above, there is nothing there that you know is illegal. Of course, there is a chance he has something more flagrant stored out of sight, but there is probably a better chance that he does not.

This statement frightens me, frankly:

I spent 11 years with a police agency... they go on calls with a lot less to go on than this...
Never forget that justice is a two-way street.

Knowing AOL is family/kid-friendly, it's no wonder the guy seemed "protective" of it. Yeah, I'd probably tip the police off. I don't think I'd feel comfortable with myself having seen what you saw and not reporting it. But I certainly wouldn't go back to the guy's place, either. Next time, instead of a computer fix, you might find yourself being urged to put the lotion in the fucking basket...

On the contrary, I'd say it's time to go undercover.

(Seriously, I'd report it.)

Screw his reputation. He has nude pictures of apparently underage girls hanging on his walls and he invites a stranger into his home. So far his reputation is that of an ugly disgusting smelly fat pig. Now you can add stupid to the list.

Besides, that's a decision for the police to make after you report it. You have the guy's name and address. The police will know pretty fast if he has a record or if there is any other reason they should investigate.

Yeah, what reputation? He's got porn everywhere in his home. It's not like you came by unannounced. Report it ASAP. The po-pos might let you keep some of the seized loot.

Going out to investigate the guy, and arresting him are two separate things...

This thread surprises me... why *wouldn't* anyone want this guy at least questioned by the police?! Having porn is one thing, having KIDDIE porn takes it to a whole different level...

I feel so weary... or is it wary?

When it comes to someone's reputation in a small community, not always.

But nothing he wrote suggests that he actually has kiddie porn. At worst, based on what the OP saw, he has borderline child erotica, which is not illegal. Furthermore, lots of girls who are 18-19 look younger, just like lots of them look older. There is a very real possibility that the guy thinks all of these girls are legal. After all, he does have them displayed prominently in frames out in the open in his home.
