Extra Money Deposited into my Savings Account!!

I was just checking my account balance online, and I noticed I had about an extra $1000 in my account. I look at the account history and it shows:

02/11/2005 JRNL ENTRY - CORRECT DEPOSIT ERROR 1/21/05 1,077.11

I rarely go to the bank on Fridays, so I don't think I deposited that money.
Is there a statute of limitations on when that money cannot be taken back?

Maybe it really is yours. Banks make - and occasionally catch - mistakes.

In the mean time, I think this:

...is wishful thinking. Some might even call it dishonest. I would not spend it unless you can replace it.

I'm no expert in banking law, but I'd be willing to bet $1077.11 that the bank can get that money back, and that it will realize the error in short order.

Seems like they're correcting some error made on 1/21/05. I'd look at the account history and see what happened on or around that date before taking any action at all.

Did you have your tax refund routed to your bank account by chance?

Usually, when this sort of thing happens the bank just takes the money out of your account electronically.

Could be a test for your future Canadian citizenship.

If it's a US bank, take the money and run.

I used to work for a bank and they can take it back whenever they want to. As far as I know, the statute of limitations is quite long. Let it sit there for a few months. They probably won't catch it. If you spend it and then they want it back, you will HAVE to pay them or they will put you in the banking checks system and no bank will ever deal with you again.

It's not a tax refund because I haven't done them yet.

Had this happen to me for $700 extra. They found it and took it back within two weeks.

Here's a guy who managed to hold about $95k for a few months. On a side note, he's managed to turn his 15 minutes into a lifelong career it seems.
