Superman is a dick!

It's safe for work, although looking at comic book covers at work might not be considered wholly "safe", sort of thing.

You know you suck as a superhero when you're in a survival of the fittest contest with Jimmy Olsen. Poor Aquaman.

And I was feeling bad for Jimmy Olsen for having to be in a survival of the fittest contest with Aquaman... it is just such an insult.

Am I the only one that really didn't find those covers funny? Maybe a few made me chuckle, but for the most part they sucked.

Bizzare. So as someone who isn't a comic book reader much, was this like a whole period where they teased audiences with "out of character" OMG covers, only to explain everything away in the stories themselves?

I like this one, and those 2 killers are wearing a super sweet ensamble, maybe that is what Wrongo Superman refers to.

Most (not all) of these covers are from the late 1950s and 1960s.

The Robin/Superman/Batman stuff and the War stuff are 1940s.

There are very few from post-1975.

They're real covers.

Superman stories during the 1950s and 1960s were known for a couple of things. First, the editor (Mort Weisinger) would typically commission a cover, then have a story drawn to go with it. So you'd get all sorts of outlandish covers, and then a writer would be forced to come up with a story where, say, Jimmy Olsen's cranium grows to enormous proportions and Superman laughs at him. As a result, more often than not, the cover image would be a single throw-away panel in a story that didn't really have much to do with the cover.

Second, Superman was ... well, like the website says. Superman was a dick. A lot of stories involved him trying to teach Lois or Jimmy a lesson. Quite often (particularly with Lois), that lesson was "Even though you're a prize-winning reporter for one of the greatest news organizations in the world, don't try to prove that Superman and Clark Kent are the same person."
