Please read the following information and pass it on to your family,
friends, students, co-workers. This is a critical safety issue that
most of us probably did not know!

MESSAGE:

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's
telephone number into the search bar, hit enter, and be given a map to
their house.

Everyone should be aware of this! Note that you can have your phone
number removed or blocked.

Please look up your own number. Read below for details. Think about
it--if a child, OR ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can
actually go to Google, type in the telephone number, and find out where
he/she lives ACCOMPANIED BY DIRECTIONS.

The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. In order to test whether
your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com/

Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e.555-555-1212) and hit
enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private
information, simply click on phonebook results link above your phone
number and scroll down.

If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but
it is a good idea just to check. If your number does come up if you hit
map, it will show you a direct map to your house...

oh no, your kid might give out their number. chances are if they do that they've already given out their name. plain old phone book will give them your address too since all they'd have to do is check the names that the kid gave against the number. big f'ing deal if google makes it slightly easier
instead of being worried about google how about teaching your kids to stfu around strangers

Since our address is not in the phone book, only the number, it just shows the town.

Google has been really good in removing phone numbers from their database when asked. I did this over a year ago and it was gone within 30 days.

I've been doing the reverse phone number look up on Google thing for well over a year.

I don't have a hard line home phone...so I'm immune to this.

Google can't even find my address. Instead of doing like mapquest and saying that it can't find it, it guesses I really meant some other address that's several miles away.

Don't all phone books also list the basic address for the person?

Since it doesn't know my address it shows a star in the middle of my town about two miles off. Could that be what's happening for you too? Or does it list your address?
