Waiting for the ball to drop - a report from Times Square

Yes, at 815am there are already little groups of people positioning themselves for the famous ball drop - more than 15 hours of waiting! Is this crazy, or what? All this for a one-minute frenzy at midnight - talk about extended foreplay!

It's actually very quiet in Times Square right now. Vehicular traffic on several east-west streets that cut across Times Square has already been cut off, and traffic is light anyway, so it's eerily quiet in the area - most tourists haven't hit the streets yet. In fact, there are probably more cops than people out at the moment.

Anyway - Happy New Year from Times Square - where I won't be tonight.

I know someone who is going but is going late which means they will be disappointed not to be right in the thick of it but possibly ultimately happy in the end that they were not right in the thick of it. Me, I'll be home watching movies

I have always wanted to be right in the middle of Times Square on New Year's Eve. I hope to make it there someday.

I've done it a bunch of times--great fun, especially if you are loaded. Great spot to pick up chicks looking for a midnight kiss, too.

The scary part is 1-2 minutes after the ball drops, when the huge mass of people realize they have to get the hell out of there. This can be a little claustrophobic.

I used to go pre-Giuliani when it was all chaos. There was no organization, not pens, to nothing. Just madcap mahyem with people flooding the streets and total disorder. It was great! Now it's just tourists behind barricades. Feh.

There are usually web-cams set up on Times Square. Anyone know of any that are currently active?

No way. I've got 60 baboons that I haven't fed since Wednesday and I'm turning them loose in Times Square at midnight exactly!

whats the bathroom situation like there? I'd want to be drunk if I went, but having to pee every 10 minutes would be bad

I heard on Howard Stern several years ago that the people who set up camp early wear diapers to take care of the bathroom situation.

I'm glad my balls dropped a long time ago. Get to go to bed early.

I was there a few years ago...cept i was on the 40th floor of a building I work in. MUCH better to be up there than down with the wackos. That's as close as I ever want to get.
