How to stop a mail thief?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a few ways to keep a mail thief away from my apartment. It's a private entrance, but so far I'm 99% certain that someone's been stealing a few letters---and the occasional package---from my mailbox/door (luckily, my DVDTalk screeners have all arrived OK). It's especially confusing because I don't live in a bad neighborhood, and I get along with all my neighbors (except the annoying guy upstairs, and it could very well be him). Anyway, words cannot describe the irritation of having mail stolen, and I'm reminded of John Travolta in Pulp Fiction: "It would be worth them doing it just so I could catch them doing it". Any low-budget ideas from the creative masses?

Stakeout... video the theif... then mail yourself the video so he steals it.

That's all I got. Somebody else gotta take it to the next level... and I'm sure that will happen shortly.

Contact them immediately. They will investigate. It's a big deal to have mail stolen.

That's a decent idea, but I don't own a video camera and don't have all day to watch out the window. I've thought about mailing a few...interesing items to myself, though.

Just don't mail yourself anything illegal or the thief might turn ya in to the postal authorities. Wouldn't that suck??

Definately contact your post office, they will do a "mail audit" (keep track of all the mail going to you for a period of time) for comparison to what you actually pick up. If there's a problem, then I believe the inspectors will come in with the high tech stuff to catch the thief.

Video!

We had a neighbor stealing our paper every morning. I was on the second floor and he was below me. Nobody else would go in our area. The guy was an unfriendly jerk so I decided it was him.

So I got up one day before the paper arrived and waited. When he came out of his apartment and picked up the paper I dropped three drinking glasses onto the concrete. Boy did he jump! I yelled "that glass had better be cleaned up!" and shut the door.

When I woke up my paper was still sitting there and there was no glass to be found. I never ran into him so it was never discussed again.
