I have a toothbrush in my stomach

How do accidentally swallow a toothbrush?

Link

Kishanlal Bhatla’s eagerness for a clean tongue last week left him with a strange story to pass down the family tree.

On October 26, Bhatla (40) was vigorously cleaning his tongue with his toothbrush, when, before he knew it, he had swallowed the seven-inch brush.

He then spent the better part of the day with the toothbrush lodged in his stomach, until doctors could surgically remove it.

“I was brushing my tongue with the toothbrush and suddenly I swallowed it,” said Bhatla, a businessman and resident of Vashi.

When Bhatla’s various attempts at getting the toothbrush out were unsuccessful, he sheepishly told his wife Sunita (36) what had happened.

“I gave him some bananas to eat in the hope that it would get flushed out,” said Sunita. “Finally, when he started to panic, we visited the family doctor who told us to get an X-ray done,” she added.

The X-ray report confirmed the presence of the brush inside Bhatla. He was immediately admitted to Punjab Kesari Charitable Trust Hospital, Vashi, and operated on for one and a half hours.

“As the brush was too long to be removed by endoscopy, we had to operate on him,” said Dr S Nagaraj, medical director of the hospital. Bhatla was discharged on October 27.

“We have come across cases where people swallow hair and nails, but this is a rare case where such a long object was swallowed,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bhatla is regaling his relatives and friends, who have come to visit him from as far away as Surat, with the brush-swallowing anecdote. “A toothbrush company can now advertise its product saying “Yeh andar nahi jaata,” he guffaws.

I guess he slipped on the floor while brushing, and hit the end, right down his throat. Probably started choking hard, then swallowed it.

What, was he brushing his tongue with his head tilted back? The toothbrush is 7 inches long! You'd have a hard time swallowing this thing on purpose!

What on earth does "Yeh andar nahi jaata" mean? Cleans your teeth and insides too??? Use can result in emergency surgery??

Why, if the rest of the article is in English, do they leave that one phrase in?

before he knew it, he had swallowed the seven-inch brush.

I think you might feel it before it's just suddenly in your stomach.

Guy at work tells me that the more sensible translation would be "For external use only" but a more direct translation is "not for going inside".
