I'm going to Japan!

w00t. I'm leaving December 7th (creepy?) and returning maybe around the 13th.

Flying to Osaka then at some point I'll take a train to Toyko and spend some time there. If I like Toyko enough, I'll extend my trip a few more days. I've got a LOT of vacation days to use up by the end of the year.

I used my United frequent flier miles ... so the trip cost me $42. The sucky thing is that I needed 90k miles to fly first, and I had 89,945.

Hey geno... we need to meet up for a beer.

Suggestions on places to visit and things to do would be appreciated!

Why didn't you just buy 1000 miles for $55?

Because I have a United Miles Plus Visa card. I'll have the miles posted to my account by the 12th or 18th at the latest. Once I have those miles, I can call up and see if they'll bump me into first.

Oh yeah, I'm going to Boston next week as well, so I'll have it by Sunday.

Very cool, I'm sure you'll love it there. I'll be there in December too (mostly in Tokyo and Yokohama).

If you give me an idea of the kind of things you like to do, I can recommend some places to go and see (in Tokyo anyway, I haven't been to Osaka yet). If you like Godzilla, the new film opens in Japan on December 4th (I'm definitely seeing it). If you like shopping for DVDs and electronics, going to Akihabara is a must (it's very close to Tokyo and easy to get to by train).

If you plan on taking the train alot to various cities, you might want to ask your travel agent about a Japan Rail pass. It's a very good discount that's only available to tourists (but you have to get one before you go to Japan).

Not only porno vending machines, but they have vending machines that sell schoolgirl panties.
Sorry, but the few machines that actually sold panties at one point are long gone. (you can still buy beer and porn in some vending machines though)

Yeah, sorry but there's no hiking up Fuji-san in December. That would be crazy.

Re: I'm going to Japan!

Have fun, be sure to point out to Japanese Customs that the day is December 7th, the day that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. I'm sure that they appreciate reminders.

Make sure you bring back something cool that you can't get here in the states like a combo all-in-one micro DVD & mp3 player, digital video recorder, GPS unit, and satellite video phone type gadget that fits on your wrist.

Oh and I guess it probably tells time as well.

Well, Japan has traditionally been xenophobic. Not just towards Americans, but any culture off of the Japanese islands. Since the Americans (or was it the British? I can't remember off the top of my head) forced Japan to open itself up to the rest of the world, they've reluctantly accepted other cultures.

Now, as sections of Japan are highly modernized and they have to do a lot of business with western companies, there's an interesting tension between the ingrained xenophobia and the desire for world success.

Of course, that's painting the culture in broad strokes and I'm not suggesting that everyone from Japan is a xenophobe.
