Christmas gift question

My dad and his wife are very difficult to buy for. Anything they don't already have, they have the means to go out and buy. They are getting ready to retire and move out of state so they don't want a bunch of knick-knack type items. Neither of them have a hobby other than collecting various items. Gift cards are out as that's what my sister always does.

So I was thinking of donating money to their favorite charity in their name. What do you guys think? My dad is way into getting things for his birthday and Christmas so I'm not sure how he would react to this. My step-mom is really into the breast cancer charity because one of her friends is a breast cancer survivor.

Thoughts?

Ideas?

How about a breast cancer scarf from Lilly Pulitzer? A portion of the cost goes to breast cancer research. You can get them a Bloomingdales.

We don't have Bloomingdales out here. I can check Meier & Frank, tho.

Thanks for the idea! That's so perfect.

I'm thinking that DVDs and porn are not going to be on this year's gift-giving list but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Name a star after them. According to the commercials, that's a great gift.

I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not, but DON'T name a star after them. It's a scam. No one can sell names to stars, stars aren't named so much as cataloged with a alphanumeric system relating to where in the sky they are located. The companies that sell these name a star gifts are really selling you a piece of paper that says they named the star and a star chart that helps you find "your" star in the sky. They pretend to sound legal by saying it will be recorded in book form in the copyright office. What this means is they will publish a book each year with the list of all the people they suckered into this and copyright that book. They can "sell" the name to the same star more than once. They will also attempt to sell you the book they publish. Nearly all astronomical organizations are on record opposing these scams.

Yep, totally being sarcastic.

I do have a good gift idea though. A lot of professional sports teams have started selling pink hats with the team's logo on it. $5 from the purchase of these hats will go to breast cancer charities (one specific one, but I'm not sure which). You should be able to buy these at all NFL stadiums as well as any authorized vendor. I'm not sure how much your father will appreciate a pink hat, but at least it goes to a good cause.

Do they still live in the same town where they met? If so, rent them a limo and have the driver take them to the their first date spot as a surprise.

A neat idea but since he was still married to my mom when they started dating, I'm thinking they probably went somewhere that I really don't want to know about...
