New color IPod announced today

Called the "IPod Photo":
http://www.apple.com/ipodphoto/

-65K color screen
-40-60 gigs
-improved battery life (15 hours)
-new version of iTunes for managing photos

...everything so far looks great, and now for the clunker:
Starts at $499

Give me a break, that's about 100-150 bucks too high.

Also announced: a new "U2 edition IPod":

nothing really new here, it's just black and has a $50 coupon for U2 music...but costs $50 more.

Really? That's about the normal price for a 40GB iPod without the color screen...

$399. Also, the IRiver h-340 with a color screen, included remote, more codec support etc, etc is about $375.

Now, but when introduced, the 40GB was $499.

Why can't they get rid of that stupid FCC symbol or print it really really small.

Maybe because the law says it has to be there and be a minimum size.

Hmm. I may have to finally sell my 30 GB iPod and get one of these 60 GB units.

If anybody wants to tender an offer, email me. I'll throw in the AC Adapter, firewire cable, wired clip on remote and even a couple of docks. One for the computer, one for your home stereo, perhaps. Works perfectly, never had any issues with it.

I might even be persuaded to leave the songs on it.

I'm glad I held off on getting an iPod. Now when I get one of the older ones, the muggers will refuse to take it!

... ... OK, you mean the 3rd gen one? The 4G 40 gig has always been 399.

The point remains, 500 bucks is way too high for a 40 gig player and simply adding a color screen doesn't really make it worth to extra clams.

Wow, I'd like one but I'm not ever going to be high enough on crack to spend $500 on an MP3 player.

they should add a camera to the ipod photo like on a cell phone.. if it can fit in a small cell phone they should able to do so with the same dimensions of a current ipod.. that might make it worth 400+

Well I paid 499 in 01/03 for a 20gb 2Gen so I would say the price is just about right.

This almost has me getting over iPod being an Apple device. I read it comes pre-loaded with How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and other U2 hits. But the articles I see now just notes the $50 off couple for the Digital Box set of all U2 tracks ($149).

Great...just purchased the "old" 40 gig one about three weeks ago...

Are the new colour versions able to do video as was speculated?

svrasputin: No mention of video capabilities. I suspect that if it could do video, it would only be on the TV output connection. But I also suspect that it hasn't got the processor power to do it anyway. Maybe later versions will, this one likely will not.

I thought U2 had sold out with the commercials... Now, it's official.
