Differs by state. In Virginia, as long as the game/tournament is in a private residence and there is no house cut, it is not illegal.

Even if it isn't, I don't think the police are going to come and bust down your door unless you have a full blown casino going inside.

We sure don't have that, but we do get about 25 people.

It's legal in CA as long as the house doesn't make any money.

Still, you should make it so you have to push a button on your wall in order to create a poker room. Old school.

Yes. Like a speakeasy. The bartop rolls over into the ground, and the place becomes a pet shop.

To elaborate further, I belong to a local poker club. We recently had to change our plan since there was a crackdown on a regular tournament held elsewhere in VA. There was no house cut, but the tournament was not held at a private residence so the commonwealth shut it down. Previously, our games were held in one of the founding member's place of business. Now what I think happened (I haven't been in a few months) is that someone rented a cheap apt and the tourneys are held there now.

I live in WA and had to call the cops after a poker game was broken up by a fight at my house about two months ago. The cops didn't say anything about the poker game even though there were chips and cards everywhere.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal in Michigan.

But I also heard about a law that as long as the home game doesn't have a win over ~$200... it's legal.

Most municipalities don't give two shits if no one gets a cut.
