Governor Refuses To Apologize For 'Indian' Remark

POSTED: 1:59 pm PDT October 22, 2004
UPDATED: 3:39 pm PDT October 22, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he won't apologize for comments he made last week against Proposition 70 that "the Indians are ripping us off."

The governor was asked at an LAX news conference Friday about the comment some called racist.

Schwarzenegger's reply was, "Read my lips. The Indian gaming tribes with Proposition 70 are trying to rip off California. I will say it again and again and again because that's what they are doing. And the reason they are upset is because the truth hurts."

Groups representing gaming tribes and the state NAACP chapter claim Schwarzenegger's comment last week at a San Diego restaurant was insensitive.

Schwarzenegger has voiced firm opposition to Proposition 70, which would allow tribe-owned casinos to adopt Las Vegas-style gaming. The governor's spokesman said the comment was in exclusive reference to the proposition.

Schwarzenegger also opposes Proposition 68. The measure would amend California's constitution and statutes regarding Indian gaming compacts negotiated by Gov. Gray Davis and Schwarzenegger. Proponents suspended their campaign earlier this month.

The governor's opposition to the two ballot measures echoes comments made during this 2003 recall campaign. At the time, Schwarzenegger said it is time for tribes to "pay their fair share" to the state.

Good for him. I hope he never caves in. And I hope that the 'Native Americans' pay their fair share!

What the hell! They are Indians! How can they be upset if someone calls them Indians?

If he called them Injuns or Redskins or something like that, I can see their point.

They don't seem to be offended when they're talking about their Indian Casinos... I've never heard of "Native American Casinos"... funny, in a sad, "the world needs to get over themselves" sort of way...

Exactly. I'm looking for the stat (without any luck), but when the whole "Native American" PC thing started up a couple of decades ago, they polled American Indians about the issue. A *huge* percentage (I want to say about 80%) were not offended by the term 'indian' and felt that the use of NA was silly.

They're American Indians. A misnomer? Probably. But that's what they are.

I know American Indians.

You know what they say they are? Besides their tribe name, of course.

INDIANS.

... from Columbus' remark about them... "Una gente In Dios"...

Now, as for the remark, if there were IRISH casinos ripping him off, and he said "the IRISH are ripping us off", he'd be perfectly justified in saying so. Same with Indians.

Then he'd be perfectly justified in saying "the jews are ripping us off".

Then again, are these jews on their own tribal reservations with special tax breaks?

all jews? all indians? do we want our leaders casting aspersions on an entire people? schwarzenegger latered specified "indian gaming tribes", but that was not his original comment.

this thread is running under the assumption that it was the word he used that indians found offensive. rather, it was that his wording placed fault on the whole of the indian people.

it would seem that donnachaone doesn't have a problem with that either?

Both the term and the wording seem fine to me. It's obvious which Indians he was referring to.

I don't see Indians by the hundreds of thousands, crossing over into California every year.

Does he know what state he is in?

I suspect the Indians and the NAACP have no problem with using the "I" word, but rather with the "ripping off" part. I suspect they're feeling hurt because they feel that Arnie is implying that all Indians are thieves.

as the elected leader of california, all of california, including the indians, he has a duty to be mindful of the words that come out of his mouth. you may disagree.

So you'd have been happy with "Native American Gambling Establishment is ripping us off," fine. They still are.

(Not that I'm in California, but they do in Michigan too. Not clear at all why they get both (or either) a monopoly and a tax sweetheart deal.
