No Nudes Is Good Nudes: Wal-Mart Refuses 'Daily Show' Book

http://www.nbc4.tv/news/3838444/deta...110212004&ts=H

POSTED: 8:32 am EDT October 21, 2004

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- No nudes is good nudes for Wal-Mart.

It seems photos of naked and aged bodies are a little too racy for Wal-Mart. The old naked people are supposed to be Supreme Court justices, in the take-off of a school textbook.

Wal-Mart executives say photographs of nine nude bodies aren't appropriate for its shelves.

The company decided this week not to offer shoppers copies of the best-selling book "America (The Book)," written by Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" writers.

The retail giant canceled its order for the books when executives got wind of the photo in the book. The picture features the nude, aging bodies, each capped with the superimposed head of a Supreme Court justice.

The book -- a mock school textbook -- parodies the American government in typical "Daily Show" fashion. The page facing the nude photos has cutouts of the justices' robes, complete with a caption asking readers to "restore their dignity by matching each justice with his or her respective robe."

Jamie Raab, a publisher for Warner Books, which produced "America," said she doesn't fault Wal-Mart for its decision. But she said she doesn't see the point in banning something that isn't intentionally sexually explicit.

"It's not gratuitous and it's very much in tune with the rest of the book," Raab said. "It's funny, yet to the point. When you undress the Supreme Court justices, they're just men and women and you have to judge them on who they are and what they do. It makes you look and think and laugh."

Raab said readers won't look at that page to get their rocks off, but to laugh.

I respect any companies right to make a decision like this, however...... God I hate Walmart.

I love Walmart myself. Great selection, low prices...don't have to look at Jon Stewart's ugly mug while I'm in there. What's not to love?

I have a superstore within 1 mile of my house. I think I need to knock out some of my teeth though, so I look like I fit in better when I go there.

Walmart is evil. When you apply at a Walmart, they also give you an application for food stamps because they KNOW they aren't paying people enough to live on.

I don't have a Walmart anywhere near me, but I do have two Targets across the street from each other.

Walmart isn't selling the book, forcing people that want to buy it to other businesses. If Walmart was selling the book, you people would complain that Walmart had an unfair competitive advantage. WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!?

Please note: I hate Walmart as well.

My issue here is that they are hurting Jon Stweart and the producers of the book.

Did you know that Wal-Mart is the world's largest seller of toys? Not Toys R Us or any other toy-specific retailer. I would imagine that they are close to being the world's largest book seller and now they don't carry it because of their bullshit religious and conservative views.

If Jon was so worried about WalMart, he shouldn't have had that picture. It isn't like this is a new policy for WM.

JON SHOULDN"T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT! We should be able to buy normal mainstream books at Wal-Mart at competitive prices without their views blocking us. It's not like it's porn or something.

If writers have to take Wal-Mart's policies into consideration when producing a book, everyone has lost.

It violates the store policy. If Jon wants to make money, he should worry about it, if he doesn't, it won't matter.
