I started my diet

I have been thinking of going on a diet for months and months now. I was always too lazy to actually start it though. Well, yesterday I finally started the diet. I am extremely out of shape. When I weighed myself yesterday, I was 316 pounds. I got up in the morning and jogged around the track at my college. I was worn out after one mile. It took me 12 minutes to do that one mile. That was the first time I had exercised in a long time. When I woke up this morning, my legs were stiff and a little sore, probably since I hadn't used those muscles in forever. I still managed to jog another mile this morning though. I have read though that to lose weight you need to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. There is no way I can last for 30 minutes. I am breathing hard after 5 minutes. After 12 minutes, I am ready to fall over. Is one mile at 12 minutes a day enough for me to lose weight or should I try to go for 30 minutes? Does the 30 minutes have to be all at once or can I do 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening?

Also, I am doing a low-fat diet. Basically all I am going to eat is turkey, fish, fruits, and vegetables. Is milk bad on a diet? Milk is healthy but it does have a lot of fat.

See your doctor for a complete physical before you start this. You don't need a heart attack or stroke. Start with something low-impact. Best thing to start would be to get one of those yoga or sweatin-to-the-oldies videos. Pace yourself, and again, be very careful.

You could try walking briskly for 30 minutes or jog-walk until you're able to jog the entire time.

I agree. I started a diet last week. I just started walking everynight as far as I could in an hour. I also started eating smaller portions of better food. Averaging about 1500 calories a day. I also cut out pop completely. I only have a diet rite maybe once every two days. So far I'm averaging 3 miles a day walking. I started at 236 pounds last monday and now I'm down to 230. I'd start walking first. You'd be surprised how tired you are after walking for an hour non stop.

I lost weight through cycling (indoor stationary unit) rather than walking or jogging, mainly because I work from sunrise to sunset. Started in April at about 225, and am currently down to 140. I think the hardest part is the first two weeks...once you get into a rythym of exercise and diet (and start seeing the weight come off) it's really easy after that...at least it was for me.

Don't jog every day. Start slow, with three days a week or you'll be miserable.

Here is a good program designed to get you up and running gradually, so you can get fit without injuring yourself:

Good luck on the diet!

Best of luck to you!

The best thing I ever did for myself was to see my doctor about dropping some pounds. He put me on some Meridia and helped me to figure out the best exercise and types of foods to eat and all it cost me was a $10 co-pay.

I'd also recommend starting slow...something like walking 3-4 times a week first, 20-30 minutes each time. As you gradually build up your endurance, you can walk for further each time (like 45-60 minutes), then eventually start light jogging.

I applaud you for your efforts, though. Always a big first step.

after you're done jogging you should walk for awhile. it will help to keep the next day soreness to a minimum. if you run a mile, then walk a half mile. or at least until you start breathing normally again. good job on wanting to get in shape, and good luck.

Non-fat milk is great once you get used to it.

Don't starve yourself or you will inevitably give up and cheat.
Cut out the junk food and sodas.
start reading labels.

Vary your cardio program or you will get bored.
