starting a painting class tonight

I'm so excited. I've really been feeling a need to do something creative and have been drawing sketch portraits on the subway to and fro work but tonight I dive into an oil painting class at the Art Student's League, which is an awesome place with tons of history (It's been there since the 1870s, many, many major American artists have studied there). I'm only taking a once-a-week class but it should really give me a huge boost. I've never done oil paintinf before and am so psyched to learn.

Sorry for the overly positive vibe of this post. I'll try to bitch about something in my next thread.

After you finish your classes, can you come and paint my living room?

That sounds really great Gil. I love art and the ability you can have to express yourself in so many creative ways. I would like to find the time to take up oil painting myself, as I enjoy drawing and like to dream a lot. I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure you'll be a great painter.

I took a painting class in college. It was pretty embarassing. We had to show our work to the class. Everybody had these great paintings and mine was anything but great.

That's great, very "sensitive" of you. Be sure to wear a beret and black jeans!

Since there's never any follow-up on threads like this I figured I'd post an update. The class has been great and I strongly encourage anyone who is the slight bit interested in this sort of thing to seek a similar program out near them. To NYC Otters I gotta say the Art Students League is fantastic. I love my teacher and I think I'm learning a lot. I just wish I could go more than once a week.

Anyway, here's a peek at my 1/2 finished painting. This is the second painting we're doing. The first came out ok but was at a terrible angle and it was really hard. I'm at an angle here where I can better see what the model looks like etc... The assignment is to paint the model in one pose (below) and then in another pose (not yet) so it's like some sort of clone art. Regardless, it's a good excersize since you have to plan for something you haven't seen yet.

Here it is. Judge away (remember, it's my second painting ever):

Great job!

A guy with no shirt...yep, you are getting more and more "artistic" the longer you take the class.

very nice. I think that you have a future and it looks like you have talent. If people can make money in chelsea selling stuff that looks like it was painted in elementry school art class, you will have no problems being successful.

I like your painting! It's very cool.

I have no artistic talent whatsoever. I'm pretty sure my 2 year old can color better than me and I *know* my 7 year old can.

Good luck with your class and be sure to post lots and lots of pics of your paintings.

Heh heh. The first model was a woman. I think they're switching off. The funny thing is the class is very free-form, meaning you don't have to paint the model. There's a guy painting a train, there's someone doing a portrait of Coltrane, etc...

The funny thing would be if the guy painting the train was looking at the model while doing it. Now THAT would be art!
