Democrats Urge More Support for National Guard & Reserves

CNN:

FARGO, North Dakota (AP) -- National Guard and Reserve soldiers deserve better health care and other benefits from the federal government, North Dakota Democrat Rep. Earl Pomeroy said Saturday in his party's weekly radio address.

Pomeroy said Congress should pass a bill he introduced to provide them increased benefits.

"These soldiers don't want out," Pomeroy said. "They just want to make sure families don't suffer as a result of their service."

The National Guard and Reserve Fairness Act would provide for increased access to TRICARE, the military health care system, and more education benefits through the GI Bill, Pomeroy said.

The legislation also has incentives for employers who continue to pay Guard or Reserve soldiers after they are deployed.

"At a time when we are asking so much of the members of our National Guard and Reserve, we have to take action to increase these benefits provided in return for their courageous service," Pomeroy said.

Forty percent of National Guard and Reserve soldiers between the ages of 19 and 35 do not have health insurance, Pomeroy said.

Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have expressed worries about the stress on reservists.

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said last month that the ratio of Reserve to active-duty soldiers in Iraq was increasing.

It's the first time Pomeroy has been selected to deliver the radio address.

Some of his colleagues suggested he talk about the No Child Left Behind Act to coincide with the start of school.

"I said I would do it if I get to talk about the National Guard and Reserve Fairness Act," he said after taping the address at the Fargo American Legion club.

"This is my mission."

I wonder how the Republican leadership will view this request?

With open arms - wouldn't you imagine, considering how 'concerned' they've been about benefits for our military and veterans in the past.

There is definately a disconnect in some people's minds about increasing military spending to build a better bomb, and increasing spending to supply the soldiers the benefits they and their families deserve. It's just second hand information from my Grandfather, but he says the VA benefits have gone down hill dramatically. He used to always go to a VA hospital for health care, now he goes to Kaiser (an HMO for those unfamiliar) because he can't get the level of care he needs from the VA. At least he has a choice and isn't stuck with only the VA.

I'm suprised at how long some of the reservists have been in Iraq. I have a cousin who is enlisted in the Army and was in Iraq for 9 months. Now that he's left he is supposed to be in Germany for at least 2 years. A coworker has a husband in the Army reserves, he's been there over a year, will get 1 month off in November, then will be back in Iraq for another year. I'm sure the job and rank have something to do with it, but I would have thought those who enlisted would be sent for longer tours than those who are reservists.

Do we really need to support veterans? I mean, once the fight is over for them, what are they really doing for the country anyway?
