I killed a 3" spider last night

It was about 2am and I had just decided to go to bed when I stumbled across this monstrosity.

Now, I can handle most bugs without a problem, but I have a problem with even getting near one that resembles a facehugger from Alien. This is the biggest spider I have ever seen in real life outside of a cage.

So I decided to spray it to death with bug spray. Unfortunately, the most lethal spray I could find was Lysol. So you would think that I just stepped on it, but no, I tried to Lysol it to death. It actually looked like it was going to work... it kept getting slower and slower and finally just stopped. I thought it was dead, so I went to get the dust pan and hand broom, because there's no way in hell that I'm picking that up with a Kleenex.

But when I came back, he was slowly trying to scurry away onto the tile (slowly because some of his hind legs were stuck to a big piece of carpet fuzz from the Lysol and he was dragging it behind him). I grabbed an unopened 24-pack of Pepsi. He stopped, thinking it was safe... but he must have realized he had made a mistake when 20 pounds of Pepsi came slamming on him.

Ugh!! Damn that pic gives me the willies. Do you live in Austraila or something? I think I'd have to get out the hairspray and lighter even at the risk of burning down my house! That must have been one hell of a SPLAT to clean up.

So it doesn't just caiuse diabetes in humans, it's also lethal to spiders, too?

Someone alert the FDA.

BTW, I love how you took the time to take a picture of it before you tried to kill it. That's shows a sense of real Otter community!

I live in Kansas right now, and we had a large thunderstorm last night. I'm thinking it came in through the sump pump... there have been other spiders, most notably a 1.5" hairy spider, but nothing as big as this freakish thing.

Since we bought our house, it's been Spider Central. Nothing nearly as horrific as that, but enough to have awaken a fear of them that I never knew I had. I should have taken pictures to see if anyone could tell me how long I'll have to live post-bite (when it eventually happens), but I've found that focus assist doesn't work as well when your arms are flailing wildly. And the tears really screw up the viewfinder.

You should have just gotten it in the box and taken it outside.

I only kill things that attack me and/or suck....like mosquitos.

Man...I sound like a tree hugger!....then I think of my death penalty views...and my equilibrium is restored.

Yeah, but something that size.... it's either kill it or buy it a dog collar.

I don't kill things that I know for a fact are non-lethal. In my old apartment we had a problem with daddy longlegs in the summers, but I would just grab them by a leg and toss them out the door.

Man, if I saw that in my house, I know I wouldn't have been able to sleep. I hate all insects and bugs!

it looks like one of the "workers" in arachnophobia, the jumpy kind.

Hopefully you didn't have to blind it first with Lysol

ICK I would have killed it myself after I aggravated it enough for it to show me his fangs like in Arachnophobia.

Well, there's one less spider for you to swallow in your sleep.

This spider identification tool seems to think that it was a brown recluse, but it was way too big. I'm still trying to figure out what the damn thing was.

Yep it's getting to be big spider season. I haven't seen one yet but it seems like see at least one before the end of every September. Get one of these

They'll get right on it and you can then fling them outside and see how far they can fly.

Here's a comforting thought, you are almost always within 3 feet of a spider.

I personally like spiders. They eat insects.

Murder sucks, so you're pretty consistent.
