"The Rabbit Died"

My coworker is telling me that the expression "The rabbit died" comes from how they used to do pregnancy tests where the test would kill a rabbit if she was pregnant (??)

Is this true??

But let's see what Snopes has to say about it!

they would inject the rabbit with morning urine from a suspected pregnant woman.

This allowed Hollywood to make the greatest movie ever.

This was also featured in an episode of M*A*S*H, where somebody wanted to use Radar's pet rabbit to see if somebody else (Major Houlighan?) was pregnant.

Not to mention an Aerosmith song with the line "can't catch the meat because the rabbit done died".

From the Snopes link in my post "Somewhere up-there":

"The origins of the "rabbit test" lie with the discovery in the 1920s that a woman starts producing a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) shortly after a fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine wall. (It was later discovered that the presence of hCG causes the placenta to produce progesterone after implantation, necessary to prevent rejection of the developing embryo.)

In 1927, medical researchers found that not only is hCG present in the urine of pregnant women, but that female rabbits injected with urine containing hCG would, within a few days, display distinct ovarian changes. Thus the "rabbit test" was born, and with it the misconception that the rabbit's death was an indicator of a positive result.

In those early tests, the rabbit always died, because the animal had to be killed before its ovaries could be examined.

& & &

Oh, & (...for the rabbit.)

Later refinements to the test enabled clinicians to inspect the ovaries without having to kill the rabbits first, but as the example cited above demonstrates, the misconception that the test rabbit died only if the woman was pregnant is still with us today, even though the "rabbit test" itself is not."

THEEK!

I'm pretty sure that the aerosmith line is:

"...can't catch me 'cuz the rabbit done died..."

I seem to remember this being mentioned on a 3's Company Episode, something about being scared, and Larry says, "I was once, but the rabbit got better".

I remember that one, it's where Larry thinks he has syphilis and has sex with a rabbit, but the rabbit doesn't get the disease, right?

Whoops, guess I've misunderstood the lyrics all this time. Changes the meaning quite a bit, I always assumed that "the meat" was a woman's p**** (vagina), and the guy couldn't get laid because he had knocked up his woman.

I guess I'll always have Stevie Nicks singing about the one winged dove in "Edge of Seventeen".

But yes, as mentioned above, the "rabbit died" phrase really went away after the 70s.
