How does Margaret Cho make a living?

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/poli...p-193981c.html

Cho is also writing a book, due next year, about the year in politics. It includes a how-to guide to activism and social change. The 35-year-old has also just completed a CD/DVD rap album about health and nutrition.
That is the only thing associated with Cho that has ever made me laugh.

Seriously, politics aside, I have no idea how this person makes a living as a stand-up. She's just not funny.

I know it isn't her politics etc., because I absolutely love Ellen DeGeneres. Love her. Laugh my butt off.

But Cho? I have no idea how she sells tickets.

If you think she is funny, can you point me to a particular routine that might change my mind?

I feel the same way about Kathy Griffin. I have no idea how she's a rich celebrity, and her episode of Cribs really depressed me.

The bit she did about her family owning the sex toy shop was pretty funny, but I agree, she's no Paula Poundstone.

She's easily the funniest comedian since Stuart Pankin.

I think when she first started to hit her stride years ago doing some stand up and I saw her performances on TV she hit her peak. Now she just re-hashes the same jokes and the new ones aren't as funny. She also gets too preachy during her performances now. Even though whatever she's usually raving about is in what I consider " my favor", I think it detracts from the actual comedic element of the show.

Her best stuff was her earlier stand up stuff that was heavily about her family.

Talking about her grandmother and her mother.

Some great quotes from those routines

Grandmothers voice " Margaret... margaret.. why you no find no man.. why you.. *snoring sounds* BINGO!"

Mothers voice.."Oh, I no like you living there.. they do the drugs.. what is it? The L the D.. the S.."
Maragaret" Its LSD mom"
Mother " How you know that!?!?"

I admit she isn't for everyone.. and some of her more recent stuff is raunchy.. but I find her incredibly funny.

kvrdave, 99% of stand-up comedians just aren't funny. I mean, does anyone really like to watch stand-up anymore anyway?

Cho makes her living by doing as much work as someone will pay her for. Hence, the acting gigs, book, cd, etc. She also has a large following in the gay community.

And, cmon, who are you kidding, that cd/dvd sounds great.

She has a cult following. That is how she makes money. The majority of her concerts sell out.

She has a large gay following and is bisexual herself.

She knows she has a large gay following and she plays to it and enjoys all their admiration of her.

Not being a gay man, and not being short and light, and besides the fact that you have hair on your head, live in a city, etc. it is amazing how similar we are.

I remember seeing her very early on and thinking, "That was mildly entertaining, but she'll never last."

When I first saw Ellen on HA! ( ), I knew she was going to do well. I actually wanted to marry her, but later found out I would probably need a sex change to do it.

Her last sit-com was never given the chance it deserved. Ellen was pretty poor the last 2-3 seasons, but "The Ellen Show" was pretty funny. Wish I could catch reruns or something.

So talentless it is inoffensive to billions. Just like "Everyone Loves Rainman."

I myself am proud to say that I have paid to see her live in New York City.

The woman puts on a great stand-up act.

This is all I can imagine. She must be great live and just mediocre in other venues.

To a degree, I would imagine.

But she isn't a token straight girlfriend of a gay guy.

She has her own lesbian experiences to draw from as well as heterosexual.

It is sort of a unique position to be in, being that she can cater her show to both sets of people.

I haven't seen her live, but I have enjoyed her dvds and seeing her standup on tv.

She plays it up to her gay following.

Around the time of her sitcom, she was on fire! But then, she burned out too to over-exposure. She's not really funny anymore.

As to how she makes a living? She probably doesn't. Most celebrities anymore make most of their fortune initially and then coast of interest for the rest of their lives. Besides, stand-up comedians isn't exactly the richest of performing arts...

I saw her Revolution DVD on Saturday night. It was alright. I met her once, and she seemed very nice.

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning on the subway, her picture was in somebody standing in front of me's paper...I have never laughed at a single thing she said or did.

I find Margaret Cho much funnier than Ellen Degeneres... never liked Ellen at all for that matter.
