Banana Split Celebrates Its 100th Birthday

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Banana split, happy 100th birthday. Wednesday was Banana Split Day at the University of Pittsburgh.

Ice cream aficionados believe David Strickler, a graduate of Pitt's School of Pharmacy invented the banana split in 1904, when he was apprenticing in a drug store. Patricia Dowley Kroboth, the dean of the school of pharmacy, said they're proud of Strickler.

The proper banana split has a halved banana topped with a scoop of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, topped with pineapple pieces, and chocolate and strawberry sauce. Then comes the whipped cream, chopped nuts and three cherries.

William Strickler, the inventor's son, says his late father never made a big deal of his claim to dessert history.

Here's a happy story for The Other!

Too bad Strickler is dead, fat people won't be able to sue him.

I work at Univ. of Pittsburgh and went over to check out this banana split party. Unfortunately they were only giving away banana split flavored ice cream, not even real banana splits. What kind of honorary celebration is that?
