Is giving money as a gift "tacky" to you?

I've heard that so much in my life I could VOMIT!

OH, What the Heck...(I'm among friends...Right?)

giving money as a gift is tacky

BLOW ME, I SAY!!!

(Just kidding for those who actually think it IS tacky... & )

Heck, I see it as a way the person on the receiving end can get something they really want or need, like pay a bill or buy lunch, put some gas in the car, get something for someone else, or even give it away, and make someone else happy!

Now, if I "know" someone, and I know what they like, I'll get them something along those lines. I've even given like a $12 CD with a $50 bill inside, but other than that, I ALWAYS give good ol' cash!

That way, YOU DECIDE what you want, and who knows better what you really want, but YOU?

(...well, apart from your Parents, Lover, S.O. etc...)

HEY! I've NEVER had a complaint yet...

THEEK!

I've never given money as a gift, because I really enjoy hunting down cool presents that I know the person will like. However, I've recieved money on several occasions and I didn't mind at all, so I guess it's cool either way.

I always give money. That way the recipient can buy what they want and not have to lie and tell me the present I bought for them is always what they wanted.

While I'd never turn up my nose at a fat wad of bills, having the person give you an actual gift is more meaningful. I look fondly on books that people have given me, but if they gave me 20 bucks and I bought the book myself, I don't think I'd have any sentimentle attachment to it.

Besides, there's a bit of a queasy feeling when I hand the five $20 bills my grandma gave for Christmas over to the girl in the massage parlour.

While I have no problem receiving cash as gifts, I have always tried to be more personal in my gift giving. Lately though I seem to have lost 'the knack' of picking up 'the right gift' for people anymore, and have been opting for gift certificates. I always feel like I haven't really thought about the person and took the easy way out.

Well, you could always keep the cash and give her a book!

That's actually what I was about to write. I am hesitant to give it but don't really care when I get it.

I say at least get a giftcard. But not to a specific place unless you know that they are going to use it. Too many people don't use giftcards, It's like free money to the company.

I love getting cash. Especially when it's stuffed down my pants.

I love getting money but to give money shows you don't care or know t he person well enough to find a present that they would truly like.

Our family is sooo fussy that gift vouchers are the order of the day.

WELL!!!

That's a "blanket statement", don't ya think, OD?

I'd like to find ONE PERSON who I ever gave cash to as a gift that felt that way!

...and if I did, I'd do the only "PC" & "Polite" thing...

I'D MAKE 'EM GIVE IT BACK!!! &

TEK!

I've always told everybody in my family that if they wish to get me books, computer equipment, or DVDs, it's best to get a gift card or gift certificate. I'm picky about that.

My mother in law works for Barnes and Noble, so I always get a huge gift card every Christmas, and I look forward to it every year.

When I'm with people, I try to pick up on clues for things they would like as gifts. For example, one of my friends once mentioned that they had never been to Build-A-Bear, and would like to go. A year and a half later, I took her there for her birthday. But if I can't think of anything, I don't hesitate to get a gift certificate or just some good ol' cash. It may be a bit impersonal, but it's CASH. Who would turn down free cash?

I usually give 'gifts' of $1 to dancing women.

Personally I don't think it's tacky but I do get dirty looks counting out the change. So I'm not so sure.

if your going to give a gift cert.. you might as well give cash

at least that way your not limiting the person to 1 crappy place to spend the money

its money either way.. so they might as well be free to spend it as they see fit

unless its a gift card for a specific purchase of an item you know they wanted.. but couldnt pick it out for one reason or another

It depends entirely on the holiday or occasion.

I'll never give cash as a gift, but I love getting it. I would take cash over a gift anyday. It saves me the hassle of looking thankful when someone gave me something crappy. I once got video and intro package into Save the Whales or something like that. How can you be grateful for that, honestly?

If your a mammal lover it might be pretty neat. However, I do love giving people with thinning hair those free Bosley Medical Hair restoration DVD's.

Merry Christmas!

Heh. I feel the same way. I find it easy to pick out stuff for my friends and family, but I'm a lot tougher to shop for -- if I want something, I usually just go out and buy it, so I don't really keep much of a wish list.

No. This should be a poll.

Actually, cash is probably everyone #1 choice as a gift (when on the recieving end).

It depends on the person or the occasion, but I remember as a kid during X-mas time being excited over those enveloppes to my name sitting in that tree.

That's why "Show me the MONEY!" sounds better than "Show me the SWEATER!"
