What's your definition of "The Armpit" of America?

A friend of mine just returned from Fresno,CA after visiting family. He went off on a 15 minute rant about how caRppy it is there. It's hot....it's boring....it's full of gangbangers...yada yada yada. Anyways, he called it "The Armpit" of America. I doubt it's that bad, but it got me to thinking....where in the U.S. would you consider the armpit?

Right next to Groucho's house. I've seen it. It qualifies as the armpit of America.

Well I didn't think it would take to long for the New Jersey resonses. Truth is, NJ has some shitty areas, but it also has alot of nice, country-like areas. I bet I could show some of you where I live and you would never think that it's in NJ.

Jersey wouldn't have nearly the bad reputation it has if it didn't cost so much to drive through it.

Thats's one of the main problems. Alot of people's only "experience" reagrding NJ comes from driving on the Turnpike. If that was the only thing I saw I would think it was a shit hole as well.

I was always under the assumption that the armpit of America was Fort Polk, Louisiana.

I dunno, but since I live in/on america's wang I don't think I should be too critical of anywhere else.

edit: I suppose I was a bit late with that one.

I always heard Bakersfield is the arm pit of California. Fresno does suck, though.

The problem is, the most people ever see of Jersey is Newark and Newark is the place of I thought of first when thinking of armpits.
MOst of NJ is actually quite nice.

Newark and Gary are armpits, btw.

I would agree. I've travelled throuout NJ, and much of it is lovely, certainly more so than most of Ohio. However, parts of it are really awful (just like Ohio, as I mentioned above).
