Israel makes "skunk bomb" for Palestinian protests

Israel makes "skunk bomb" for Palestinian protests

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's army has developed a pungent new weapon for driving back Palestinian protesters -- the skunk bomb.

The stink bomb, containing a synthetic version of the odor skunks release to deter predators, has been developed for breaking up protests and stone-throwing confrontations without causing casualties, security officials said Wednesday.

The foul-smelling weapon was invented as part of efforts to replace rubber bullets, which have killed scores of Palestinians during a nearly four-year-old uprising.

The new device, which is not yet operational, releases a cloud so pungent that according to initial tests it permeates clothes for five years, the officials said.

Palestinians said such a weapon could be particularly unpleasant for devout Muslims since they cannot pray with clothes that smell and would have to throw them away.

Israel's army has often been accused of using excessive force in fighting the Palestinian uprising and security officials said it was trying to work with foreign and local firms to develop nonlethal measures.
Another weapon which is close to being operational is a fiberglass tank shell that disintegrates in the air, causing an enormous explosion but no casualties.

At least eight Palestinians were killed in May when a tank fired a shell too close to a crowd in the Gaza Strip that the army was trying to disperse.

Non-lethal measures are good.

But....this kind of thing might not work everywhere, France for example.

Fiberglass tank shell??!? is it really 'non lethal' to have pulverized fiberglass in the air?

Anyway I like the stinkbomb idea!

I'll get in trouble for this, but it would be better if the smell was sizzling bacon.

Oh woe be on Israel for they shall face yet another human rights violation resolution and a strike of massive paper bullets from the almighty UN.

Fiberglass burns at a pretty low 500 degrees F, so I imagine that if you made the explosion hot enough, fast enough, you could vaporize the shell leaving nothing behind but gases. Worst case scenario is probably some burns and such, but it'd likely not be fatal.

They should make it smell like "grandma perfume" so all the dudes will be pissed that they smell like old ladies. Either dat or make it smell like nut so everyone will think they're at the dentist.

Wow, that is so nice of the Israelis.

In other breaking news, Palestinians have engineered an explosive that, when activated, projects little Nerd candies at it's enemy, and does no harm to the suicide bomber. Palestinians say up next is an assault rifle which shoots Matzah Balls.

BUT WAIT!!!

I know they said clothes but wouldn't the "smell" linger in the streets and on whatever it touched, like buildings & cars & oxen & goats & chickens (and the like) for a LONG time too?

Maybe not such a good idea after all?

Seems to me that if you want stink bombs all you have to do is go to your local fireworks stand.

So instead of having flying fiberglass that might hurt people, we have a huge explosion that would vaporize the fiberglass before it hurts anyone? The"non-lethal" part is sounding more and more fishy...

Maybe the Palestinians will retaliate by using goat bombs and the Israeli skunks will smell like goats.

Doesn't have to be huge, just has to be very hot.

Why do they have to use fiberglass?

I mean, why can't they contain the explosive within thick plastic surrounded by thick cardboard?

I believe they do that with some of the larger fireworks...

(I don't know much about this sorta stuff, and I'm just asking a question here, so please...FOR GAWD'S SAKE...BE GENTLE WITH ME!!! )

TEK!
