BREAKING NEWS: 2 Russian airliners crash

One Russian Airliner Crashes, Second Missing
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

MOSCOW A Russian airliner crashed south of Moscow (search), and another passenger jet went missing about the same time after both took off from Moscow, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Tuesday. There was no word on survivors.

Authorities were not ruling out terrorism, the agency said.

A Tu-134 airliner (search) that apparently had 42 people aboard crashed in the Tula region, 125 miles south of Moscow, at about 10:56 p.m. Monday, ITAR-Tass reported, citing the Emergency Situations Ministry (search).

A Tu-154 with 44 people aboard went missing about the same time near Rostov-on-Don, about 600 miles south of Moscow, but authorities had not found the wreckage, ITAR-Tass said.

Earlier, however, the agency said emergency officials reported that the second plane crashed about three minutes after the first one.

Quoting an unnamed air traffic official in Moscow, where both planes originated, ITAR-Tass said authorities were not ruling out terrorism. The agency also reported that witnesses said they saw an explosion before the Tula region crash.

The plane that crashed near Tula was headed to the southern city of Vologograd, while the plane that disappeared was flying to the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, where President Vladimir Putin is vacationing, ITAR-Tass reported.

In Washington, a senior U.S. State Department official said, "We are obviously concerned by the news. We're following developments closely and trying to determine the facts."
Story says the 2nd is missing but on the news they said it too had crashed

Russian Plane Crashes, Another Said Lost

A Russian airliner crashed south of Moscow, and another passenger jet went missing about the same time after both took off from Moscow, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Wednesday. There was no word on survivors.

Per this, they both took off from same airport.

Three minutes apart?

Explosions in midair?

Same airport?

hardly a non-terrorist scenario, unfortunately

Seriously - That's awful.

And Russia is not as nice as we are when it comes to payback.

I believe we should aspire to be more like them. We are too nice when it comes to payback (well, except with the Japanese. We played hardball there)

Absolutely true. But if we play hardball, the surviving terrorists (or their families) will use our lawyers on us. The Doomsday scenario, if you will.

Even so, they are still just as active as they were two years after the Moscow Theatre incident.

I realize that, but the Russians still aren't going to give in anytime soon.

When I was on vacation couple of weeks ago, I was watching Leno, he was talking about terrorist threats in Las Vegas. He said the Federal government had tapes with very specific infomation about the threats, but the casinos and hotels turned them away because they were afraid they'd be sued for libel. Then he said it was sad that we're more afraid of lawyers than terrorists.

Edit: Typo. Stupid laptop keyboard.

I heard most of that too, but what I heard was that Vegas (casinos) were more afraid of the negative comments and their affect on the bottom line. Different spins.

The first thing I thought of was a mid-air collision. Is there any evidence that would rule that out?

They were about 500 miles apart and disappeared from radar within minutes of each other. Hard for them to collide with each other. If they collided with two other planes, there'd be four planes down.

Think some reports are saying a bomb also went off in Moscow.
