Otterville Virtual Marathon: Rules and Sign-Up (26 "Miles" of "Fun"!)

In honor of the Olympic games in Athens this year, I propose that we hold an Otterville Virtual Marathon so we can have our own 26 "Miles" of "Fun"!, with no training necessary! Here are the rules as I see them (but they can be amended based on your comments and suggestions):

1. The objective of the race is to make 26 posts in a special thread (started on race day) before the other "runners." Sounds easy? Well, here's the rub: you must wait at least one hour between posts.

2. Your posts must contain at the very minimum, the mile marker you've reached in bold text: Mile 1, Mile 2...Mile 24, Mile 25, FINISH. As long as you have the correct bolded text, you can put any other content in your post that you see fit.

3. If you fail to wait at least one hour between mile markers (based on the timestamp in your post), you will be disqualified. If you post your mile markers out of order, or post the same mile marker twice, you will be disqualified. If you make any posts besides your mile marker posts, you will be disqualified (except for the three Judges, who can make posts giving out warnings, disqualifications, etc). There will be a separate thread for discussion.

6. While the race is going on, "runners" are free to post in other threads. You won't be limited to the marathon.

7. The first runner to correctly post all the mile markers in order, with at least an hour between markers, wins! Plus they'll set the world record for this exciting new event! (Note: the fastest possible time is 26:00).

8. You don't have to post every hour. That's just the minimum. Sleep your eight hours as normal if you wish. Or, push on through the night and increase your lead against the lazy. How you run the race is up to you.

9. The BLUE RULE SPECIAL: Periodically, the judges will post new rules of the game in BLUE. This might be anything from special text that has to be in your mile marker posters, to directing racers to a new thread. Keep your eyes open! Anybody who fails to obey a blue rule will be disqualified. In case of posting overlap, judges will give five minutes of leeway before enforcing the rule.

10. The Marathon will start Thursday, August 26, at 7am Pacific (10am Eastern). Which means that runners can post their first mile markers in the appropriate thread beginning at 8am Pacific (11am Eastern).

Additionally, I need two volunteers to help me judge the race and enforce the rules. Judges can run the race as well. Anybody can do the job, but if possible I'd like one of the judges to be somebody who patrols the boards in the evening/late night (USA time).

I've tried to keep things as simple as possible, but these rules aren't set in stone. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions, and also if you plan to participate in the marathon.

Did we lose a time zone somewhere?

Oops! Thanks, guys. I forgot that there are "people" living in that time zone between Pacific and Central.

Disqualification. You're free to post in other threads, of course.

Wow, the event hasn't even begun and it's already awash in controversy. I think the judges will have to be extra careful to look out for cheaMile 1ters.

uhhh, I think that the Otter-Free Day Challenge was much easier. If anyone wins in 26 hours, that'll mean that they sacrificed sleep and something called a life so that they can win Groucho's challenge. Groucho, you should be honored

i'll have to read up on how to use bold, so the "no training required" statement isn't necessarily true.

I do wish that Groucho had picked another week for this since, as a member of the U.S. Track and Field team, I'll be missing four of my events in order to participate in this challenge. Oh well.

To make something bold, you just backspace and retype the same word three or four times on top of itself.

Bummer. I'd be in if it was Wednesday night instead of Thurs. I'll be gone when the race starts, but am pulling an all-nigther the night before.

Too bad this isn't on a Friday. I can't stay up for 26 hours straight AND go to work.

Re: Mile 24

You should offer prizes to drum up interest. Like, the winner gets a night with Groucho, 2nd place is two nights with Groucho, etc.

You don't have to post every hour. That's just the minimum. If you need to take a break to sleep/work/watch DVDs, by all means do so.

I would play but the sleep issue will get in the way. But good luck to all the challengers. Brilliant idea Groucho.
