Going away for college in a week... Nervous? No. Terrified? Yes

Yes little ole' me has finally hit college. And I couldn't be more scared. It didn't really hit me until tonight. Like woah... I'm moving all the way from Staten Island, NY to Ventura, CA.

I'm attending Brooks Institute of Photography to study Feature Film Production, and I already have a job set up (transfering from my Best Buy store to the Oxnard store) so I'm pretty set when it comes to that.

I'm less scared about my classes than I am about things not working out. What if some paper got misfiled and all my classes get mixed up? Or what if my roommate is a total asshole? Stuff like that. Anyone have any tips for the soon-to-be independant?

I know how you feel. On Wednesday I fly out to a technical institute to pursue a Master's degree. I'm scared about things working out too, as the degree is in an area that isn't very closely related to my undergraduate work. What if I get there and find that I am completely in over my head? Eek.

Not to mention the fact that I've never been to Sweden. What if I don't like it there? That and the pesky language barrier.

You should be nervous if you can't spell "terrified."

You'll be ok, and if there's some problem, you'll deal. That's what growing up is all about: learning to deal with problems.

Metering how much fun you'll have will probably be your biggest problem.

I have my first classes tomorrow and I am stoked.

I had some of the same jitters as you do (as most people would) when I first went to college last year. I stayed in-state, though (moved from SoCal to Norcal, attending UC Davis). The transition wasn't too harsh for me, and I'm sure you'll be ok too. Sounds weird, but the challenge of dealing with the curveballs that life might throw at you at this point is part of the fun of the college experience.

And the hot, drunk, college girls.

You are very likely to have a good time. Don't sweat it, everyone is going to be in the same situation as you. Enjoy yourself, learn a lot, and watch the time management. Oh and jump on the hot co-ed's. You'll definitely miss that when you are done.

They let 15-year-olds into college these days? Criminy.

*sniff*

Our little boy is going to become a man!

Seriously, don't sweat it, this is a big step (leaving the safety of home, going into the unknown), but it has been done by millions, not to mention most of us.

One word of wisdom: Have some fun, but remember that your education is job # 1. Party or goof off only after you have finished your homework or studying for the next day. When I was in college I saw many freshmen just go wild, and quickly flunk out, never to be seen again.

OK, another word of wisdom: "Terrified" has two 'r's.

Leaving Staten Island? Have you gone mad? Where else can you get horrendous traffic, ten condos where one house once stood, Brook-a-line neighbors, and all the dump-induced cancer you can swallow?

Good luck in college, little buckeroo. No matter where you are, Jim Beam will always be your friend.

That's really important. I didn't do a good job of it the first 2 quarters of college and it really screwed me over.

Having an asshole for a roommate isn't all bad - it gives you chance to feel superior.

Simply stay focused. Remember why you are there, and what you want to accomplish.

If you have an idiot roommate, you could always get a change. I had a druggie roomate who was completely my opposite. We lasted a semester, then I moved in with a new roommate, who was a friendly pot smoking hippie....who ironically I just ran into a few weeks ago.

Good luck.

I hope the guy/girl ratio at your new school is better than they are at engineering schools.
