Gator IPO in jeopardy

SCREW GATOR!!!!! grrr

No IPO For Gator

Contributed by Mike on Thursday, August 12th, 2004 @ 02:16AM
from the the-spyware-gods-have-spoken dept.
While people are still watching for that Google IPO any day now, the door seems to be slamming shut for many other dot coms that hoped to leap through into the publicly traded world. Among the many firms who have delayed or pulled their IPOs in recent days, famed adware ("don't call us spyware!") company Claria (better known as Gator). No details are given, but there's a short blurb in this article noting that Claria has delayed its IPO citing "unfavorable market conditions". Maybe the problem is that their "adware" is bogging down all their underwriters' computers. August is almost always a notoriously bad month for IPOs, so it makes you wonder why so many companies have been trying to push through now. Chances are the IPO market will rebound again at some point in the near future, so this may just be a short-lived break before Gator-ware infects Wall Street.

Amen.

When I was an internet newbie I used their service for a few months.

Once I got a bit more internet savvy....I realized what their crap did.

Took me a bit to uninstall everything....and there was alot of it.

You and everyone else. It probably was the first spyware in existence. I know it was the first to make the news. It sucks that they are still in business.

I was.

On topic... it will be sad to see Gator go the way of the dodo. There are a lot of good bargains in those pop-ups.

No fear, people! It looks like Microsoft will save Claria/Gain/Gator! Isn't that great?

Microsoft Eyes Buying Controversial Adware Maker For $500 Million: Report

By Preston Gralla Networking Pipeline

Microsoft is in talks to buy controversial adware maker Claria for $500 million, according to a report in today's New York Times. The report said that Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer had given the go-ahead for the negotiations, which began two weeks ago, but that there has been opposition within Microsoft to the acquisition.

Claria, based in Redwood City, California, was previously known as Gator, but changed its name because of the controversial ad-delivering practices associated with Gator. Claria has been criticized by privacy groups because of the way its software tracks user habits and delivers pop-up ads. It has been sued by a number of companies for the practices, including the New York Times.

The report said that Microsoft is pursuing Claria as a way to catch up with the advertising prowess of Google. It also said that a group of people within Microsoft opposed the deal, worrying that "the move could bring an outcry as critics portray Microsoft as Big Brother, trying to track every mouse click on the Web and profit from it."

According to the Times, Claria initially approached Microsoft earlier this year to see if Microsoft was interested in Claria's BehaviorLink service, which would track the Web use habits of 40 million users with Claria software on their systems. That information would be used to sell ads to publishers, but the ads would be traditional ones, rather than pop-ups. The acquisition talks began as an outgrowth of that meeting.

The report noted that the negotiations may be at a point where they will break off as early as today, killing any potential deal.
Though the last paragraph is probably right, I think it's important to watch how this ends up.

this is great news for me since I own Symantec

there is a lot of worry that MS is going to take some of the market, but who would trust their AV/spyware software if they buy claria?
