Sudan: How long do we wait?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...nm/sudan_dc_35

U.N.: Sudan Launches Fresh Helicopter Attacks

The government is launching attacks on the people and the U.N. says its not a genocide. Annan seems to want countries to go at it unilaterally (I guess he realizes that the U.N. has waited long enough).

When will we (the world) do something?

World intervention is long-overdue. I had a thread back in June on this topic: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ighlight=sudan

We waited over 13 years for Saddam as he disobeyed UN resolutions, and even then, many wouldn't act with us. We probably have to give Sudan equal time. And I can't understand anyone wanting us to act unilaterally. We clearly need the UN to call it genocide, for the Security Council to pass resolutions calling for military action, and for France and Germany to take the lead in building an international coalition as we're a little busy.

(In other words, nothing will happen, except the UN will verbally will wring its hands, bitch and moan.)

It's a United Nations' function to do so. Only this time let's not supply the forces to the Security Council to get the job done. There should be plenty of countries who would want to volunteer their forces.

This is so sad. After Rawanda they promised to never let it happen again, but they don't have the guts to recognize it until after it has happened.

Why is Kofi still even there? He represents nearly everything that is wrong with the UN to me (probably because nearly everything is wrong with the UN and he has been there forever).

Frankly we have far too much on our plate as it is. Between telling other countries what to do, occupying other countries indefinitely and being expected to police the rest of the world, I think we need to start looking out for ourselves.

The problem is the people.

You go in there and "save them", a few months later, those same people you saved will kill others for the same idiotic reasons.

I agree. But why on earth does the UN have forces if it doesn't use them on something like this? In what situation do you use them?

In a situation that makes them money.

The UN doesn't have any permanent forces. It raises forces by "donations" of units from member countries. That is why it is so slow. It takes Security Council resolutions to authorize anything, then member states have to be talked into providing troops, money, etc. Then they have to get everybody together and send them.

Sudan has said it will attack any forces coming in to stabilize things, so this force would have to have extremely clear lines of authority, rules of engagement, logistics, etc. UN forces never do, they struggle in "peacekeeping" roles after the fighting has mostly stopped. A force would have to go in with a "stand down or die" attitude towards the rebels, and probably towards the Sudanese army. It isn't going to happen.

If the UN can't handle something like this, then I don't even know why they exist at all. Although I know slamming Israel and the United States on a daily basis takes up a lot of time and energy.

Suckage for sure.

I fear it will be a long time before we help. We just dont have the forces at this point (I guess).

Plus its election time. That said I think everone can agree this is the kind of issue were we should flex our strenght.

Tsar Chasm,

How about we do the killing and they crawl to us for a peace agreement.
