Buying a car in a different state

Simple question: If you buy a car in one state and you reside in another state, to which state do you pay the taxes? Friends have told me you have to pay taxes to both states. What is true?

The state you reside in - at the minimum. I bought a car in CO and had to pay WA tax (7.8%)

I got stuck by this. I leased a car from NJ for MD. I had to pay full tax on the car, instead of just the part I was leasing. What a bunch of hosers.

I buy most of mine in Oregon with no sales tax, and have to pay WA tax when I go to license it. Would be the same for you. Make sure you don't pay any tax in the state you buy it from (unless it is your state, naturally).

Thanks. That broadens my range of dealers I can look at when thinking of getting another car.
