Mich. Town Split Over Muslim Loudspeakers

By Associated Press

April 14, 2004, 3:17 PM EDT

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. -- A request by Muslims to allow mosques to use loudspeakers for the call to prayer has prompted a backlash among some of their mostly white, Christian neighbors.

They are circulating a petition opposing the request by the Al-Islah Islamic Center for a change in the city noise ordinance. The Muslim call to prayer occurs five times a day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

"When you call to prayer, you are proselytizing, and as a citizen of the United States, I don't want to hear it," Bob Golen, 68, said at a City Council hearing Tuesday.

Caroline Zarski, 81, agreed. "It is not my God. My God is Jesus Christ. I don't want this noise invading my home at 10 p.m.," she said.

Still, Council President Karen Majewski said the proposed amendment is likely to pass next week in this separate municipality inside Detroit.

Muslim speakers said they often hear church bells as early as 6 a.m. They said the call to prayer would be less noisy.

"It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody," said Abdul Algazali, a Hamtramck businessman.
Two points:
1.That it is a "low pitched voice" is BS, I remember being woken up in India all the time at 6 am by their yelling.
2. Anyone want to guess what percentage the "split" is that is alluded to in the headline. 99% to 1%?

If I lived in that area and the church started their bells at 5 am or 6 am, I would complain too.

A bell is not a call to prayer in our society. Its overriding purpose in our society is to mark the hour. A call to prayer is just a call to prayer and serves no other purpose.

And yes I would probably complain about bells ringing at 10 PM.

Of course, this kind of crap will pass because of the politically correct bullshit that is happening in our society. No one wants to offend the Muslims because they are afraid to be labeled a racist or have somebody show up on their bus with an explosive vest.

Interesting. Not the town I thought it would be when I read the title.

I agree about the church bells. I wonder, if the change in the ordinance doesn't go through, what is going to happen when the church bells continue on?

If the change is not approved, I wonder what the backlash will be for the double-standard.

I agree, bhk. I just think the rules should be applied across the board.

Um. church bells are a call to church. Father Time isn't a a "father" in the religious sense.

I remember when our temple was in a residential area, some local residents complained that at night, when there were a lot of cars leaving, their headlights were too much. We asked people not to turn on their full headlights until they got out of the parking lot and drive with their parking lights in the parking lots. Antagonizing neighbors is usually not a good idea.
Guess the Christians in that town missed the "Love thy Neighbor" sermon.
6 am everyday of the week is too early to love thy neighbor.

Care to explain? My local church rings the bell on the hour during the day. There isn't anything going on in the church except for someone ringing the bells. No service. No prayers.

I live about 25 miles from there, so I won't hear it. In my town, the churches obey our noise ordinance which is more tolerant from 8AM - 9 PM, and less tolerant from 9 PM - 8 AM.

Also any Muslim call to prayer I have ever heard has been the most god-awful caterwauling you can imagine. The only church bells I really notice near us is a rather famous carillon that sounds pretty good. Can't really call it noise, even if I don't believe, and it is played briefly during the service, not a call to the service. Can't they use clocks?

Yes, imagine hearing it every day at 5 or 6 am on your vacation.

I viewed it as a form of mind control. You'll hear the same shit in communist countries.

yep. Also agree 100% with chanster.

However, it might be possible to tell the Christians that it is just "speaking in tongues". It sounds eerily similar.

Ditto. I've only heard it when I was in Jerusalem, but it was so incredibly annoying I don't know how anyone could stand it.

this is a easy one.

Christians...use one type of bell
Muslims... use another type of bell

Limit the db's and give them both a "ring zone timeslot".

Done.

Or

Give everyone specific beepers

It's going to get worse if they get to use the Loudspeakers at 6 am.On the month of Haj they will start more earlier like 4 am!And they do this 5 times a day!On Fridays they will even try to air the whole sermon on the the loudspeakers and you will never have 1 day of peaceful rest in your own home unless you soundproof it

This will pass because of political correctness - and once it begins, most of the community is going to get pissed off and annoyed. They will eventually have to come to an agreement, because I don't see this lasting very long.

This will not pass. If it does, it will be destroyed via vandalism.

Just my guess.

It happens so often, you're like the boy who cried wolf any more. Wait when I do something REALLY stupid, and nobody will pay attention to you.
