Matthew Sweet suffers debilitating stroke while on tour

Singer Matthew Sweet suffers 'debilitating' stroke while on tour with Hanson, GoFundMe launched

As a big fan of Sweet's early 90's output (the Girlfriend album is top ten material for me), this one really hits. Also love his Under the Covers albums with Susanna Hofffs.

He just played in Baltimore the day prior to the stroke and was set to play in Toronto the next evening. Wishing him a full recovery, though it sounds like he has a long road ahead of him. Contributed to the GoFundMe given the high cost of hospital care for Americans in Canada and since he makes his living primarily from touring.

That's a bummer. Unusual to have a stroke that young (60). Maybe he had hypertension or diabetes or something.

Seems like younger people having strokes aren't particularly rare. Luke Perry died from a stroke at 52, John Singleton at 51, artist Norm Breyfogle at 58.

I've also have several acquaintances IRL who had strokes in their forties and fifties, though they survived and fully recovered.

Growing up, it always like something that happened to elderly people, not those in the primes of their lives.

I do intake forms on about 10 stroke patients or so per shift. I don’t really bat an eye at the age unless they’re under 50. 60 is definitely younger than the average but not out of the norm at all. Whats really fucked up is when a minor is called in which happens way too often. We’re not able to accept them through my service so i don’t know much about their symptoms just that they exist.

The article says Sweet got treatment quickly but doesn’t say how quickly or what treatment. Seriously folks - if you have a feeling that something isn’t right with your motor functions get to the hospital asap. There are drugs that can minimize or even neutralize the effects but often time you have to get them within 4 hours or so of onset. I say that as a huge procrastinator in almost all things.

I saw him in concert just a few years ago and he looked awful. He had gained a ton of weight and couldn't even stand up during the concert. He just sat and played. From what I remember, he sounded good and played well but it was kinda sad. I am a huge fan of his and even had his first two albums before Girlfriend came out.

Sad news, hope he recovers. I am not a superfan but I certainly own a couple of his albums. Intervention Records put out several of his best albums on SACD a few years back.

Girlfriend is a great album, but my favorite song of his is "Sick of Myself" from 100% Fun. He also has a great cover of "Magnet and Steel" out there.

I know Lucinda Williams had a bad stroke about three years ago, she has regained her voice and can walk but no longer plays guitar. Hopefully, he can recover and sing again.

Yeah, he's been pretty big for years now, and from what I've seen, he's just kept gaining weight.

.

Susanna Hofffs? Are we sure the stroke was not a result of being around her and his brain being overwhelmed with her being so lovely?

Yeah, I love those albums as well! Their cover of "I See The Rain" is stunning.
I was lucky enough to see them perform together at a tiny, packed club during SXSW. It was amazing! Not sure if they actually did a full tour together?

I saw many groups at the House of Blues in San Diego. I would do what I could to get up front. So during The Bangles show I was right at the front of the stage. One thought I had was "Wow so pretty up close and I can see up her nostrils." rotfl

On the subject of Susanna Hoffs -- it was years later that I realized she was the guitarist for Ming Tea in the Austin Powers movies.

Y'all are killing me with these bumps. I keep thinking it is to announce he is worse off or even dead.
