Ain't a joke too obscure for me to try it. I thank you for noticing!

I'm surprised they haven't been cancelled. Didn't the lead singer admit that he loves little girls?

Actually he's had a much more recent scandal.

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

I'm honestly surprised that no one has mentioned "Goodbye, Goodbye" which was the closing credits song for Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Was my first real exposure to the band, but I did love quite a few of their albums, esp. Dead Man's Party. My favorite track of theirs is their re-recording of "Try to Believe," the closing credit theme to Midnight Run, on their album, Dark at the End of the Tunnel.

For those into cult films, I would also suggest checking out the film, Forbidden Zone, which included Elfman's first score, and which was directed by his brother, Richard. It's a live action homage to Max Fleischer cartoons. BTW, Oingo Boingo got it's name from Richard's theatre troupe, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.

"Goodbye, Goodbye" closing credits sequence for Fast Times is one of the all-time best closing credits sequences!

(Did not know that was Oingo Boingo, however, or forgot or something.)

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

For other Boingo appearances in 80s soundtracks, they did the closing theme to Bachelor Party (their song "Who Do You Want to Be" is also featured in the film, but did not make the physical soundtrack album. An album I highly recommend, BTW). Their song "Better Luck Next Time" was only available on the Last American Virgin soundtrack for the longest time, making that a sought-after release by Boingo fans.

I wonder if Elfman's movie composing career derives from so many soundtrack appearances in the 80s, or if Elfman always knew movies was where he wanted his music to appear, and the easiest way to get a foot in the door was contributing songs from his band.

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

That right there is pretty telling. What band has been on more soundtracks & yet remained so unknown?

Like everyone else not from SoCal. I only know Weird Science (bought the 45 at some point) & Dead Man's Party (barely). They're one of those bands I meant to explore & never got around to. Are the movies Weird Science & Back to School even known these days? They don't seem to have survived & thrived past the 80s the way Ferris Bueller or even Breakfast Club have.

Don't forget, they had TWO songs on the soundtrack to Tom Hanks' first* starring role, Bachelor Party!
*(well, Splash came out a couple months before, but he did Bachelor Party first)

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

I am from Southern California, so their EP was the first thing I had by them (although Dr. Demento used to play the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, so that's probably where I first heard of them). I always thought they were more well-known, so interesting to see in this thread people heard of them until Weird Science...I was kind of over them by that point (it's fine, just wasn't my thing).

He really couldn't help it, he didn't want to do it, he's underprivileged and abuse, perhaps a little bit confused.

To answer the original question I lived in SoCal and listened to KROC but always assumed they were a novelty band. As to your link is that him or her? Unless you're Robert Plant old men shouldn't wear long hair.

I was not a big fan of theirs but I did like the song "Gratitude"

The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boing on The Gong Show in 1977. It's not as weird as you think; it's weirder!

From the best concert film of all time (and yes I've seen Stop Making Sense), here's Oingo Boingo in Urgh! A Music War from 1980. The unimpressed guy with the mohawk is indeed Darby Crash of The Germs

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

I'm 45 and lived the first half of my life in California and couldn't name an Oingo Bongo song either. I don't remember ever hearing of them until like Nightmare Before Christmas became popular and people were mentioning Elfman had been in a band before.

Re: Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?

At this point, I think the question "Why Have Oingo Boingo Been Forgotten?" has been definitively answered. It's easy to forget a band that you barely knew existed in the first place.

I never forgot about them. They were kinda one-note at times but had some brilliant stuff.

Close enough to living somewhere who cared about the band.

In 2020, when I missing work due to the pandemic, I worked part-time at a Spirit Halloween store, and Dead Man's Party was one of the songs in continuous rotation.

Exactly. It's considered a faceless novelty song for the holiday. It may as well be "The Purple People Eater" (except that one was a huge hit).

I understand that people don't know the band, but people are also saying that no one knows any of their songs. Whether you know "I Love Rock and Roll" was Joan Jett or think it's Pat Benatar, you are familiar with the song.

Dead Man's Party plays a big role early in the book Ready Player One. I was disappointed Spielberg didn't include it in the movie version.

And even less know that Joan Jett's version is a cover from The Arrows.
