I didn’t pick up too many albums this year, but the two that made the biggest impression on me were:

The Beths - Expert in a Dying Field
Sloan - Steady

Runners-up: Metric - Formentera; Nectar - No Shadow

I’ll admit to being let down by PUP’s The Unraveling of PUP the Band, and Scandal’s Mirror was a little too mellow for me.

Not counting live albums, EPs, or movie soundtracks, that’s about all the new music I bought in 2022.

What did you think of this one? I heard a little bit of the band and it sounds like something really up my alley.

I didn't buy too many records in 2022 that were released in 2022, and the ones that were were usually older unreleased material. Like The Muffs' release of Kim Shattuck demos. In fact, the only two I can tell from my Discogs list that were true 2022 releases were The Linda Lindas' Growing Up, and Ryan Hamilton's 1221. The Hamilton record was actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be, a "throw in" to an already overpriced stack I had in my hand on RSD back in April.

I really like it. There's a magic to their first album that I'm not sure will ever be topped for me, with an especially nice balance between gorgeous harmonies/melodies and barnstorming power-pop. I'd still recommend "Future Me Hates Me" as a starting point, but this one doesn't lag too far behind.
