Not seeing any info on cause, though The Specials tweeted it was after a brief illness.

Great voice. I fucking loved his voice.
Caught The Specials on an anniversary tour a few years back. Still sounded wonderful.

The Go-Go's toured with The Specials in England. Go-Go's guitarist Jane Wiedlin and him had a brief affair (while he was with another woman). This resulted in them writing the song "Our Lips Are Sealed." They each released a version of the song with their respective bands (his band at that time was Fun Boy Three).

Ugh. Kicking myself for never seeing them, even if it was the 90s/00s reunion shows and not the original act. I did see the mashup of The Specials and English Beat, naturally called Special Beat, but never The Specials proper.

The only time I saw The Specials was in the late 90’s, so no Terry Hall at that time.

Did any of these bands ever have hit songs? I've never heard of any of them.

For me, and most likely all of America, my first exposure to The Specials and ska music was when they performed on SNL:


You can easily see the link between punk music and ska in that clip. And while I did watch this episode live when it aired, I have to say I was just not ready for this kind of music yet.
