I agree with Coma being the best from UYI I. The second one is harder for me, Locomotive would be up there along with maybe Breakdown. There is a fair amount of filler in both those albums though. Illusion 2 has more epics/long songs on it though.

I like "The Spaghetti Incident."

It's only real sin is that a covers album was the last the thing the band recorded before the classic line-up imploded.

"Appetite for Destruction," "Lies," "Use Your Illusion I," "Use Your Illusion II," and "The Spaghetti Incident" aren't a bad body of work, but even though it's five records worth of material, it only has two actual albums in it, counting the Illusion records as a double album.

I wasn't surprised to see it missing from the AFD box set, but it's omission was a bit glaring. I think the only time I've seen footage of it played live was at an acoustic set in NYC back in 1987. The video was terrible quality, I'd love to see a nice quality video of that set.

Silver lining - Finally picked up a nm used copy of UYI 2 for $25 on reddit since i’m not planning on getting the big set now. Already grabbed 1 a few months ago for about the same.

Now just need spaghetti incident to have their full catalog on vinyl. Going to be costly but a fraction of this set.

I would love just a single vinyl of the best 8 or 10 songs of my own choosing.

The 27-track Las Vegas concert from January of 1992 on here sounds amazing. Love it.

Not loving how the NYC show from 9 months earlier sounds, also may have been a warm up show at a theater.

Re: GUNS N' ROSES: Use Your Illusion I & II 30th/31th Anniversary - November 11, 2022

I'm a huge GnR fan and came across an issue that's driving me nuts. There are 4 tracks on the Live Era album taken from the Las Vegas January 25, 1992 show that's included in it's entirety on the Illusion set (Nightrain, Welcome to the Jungle, Yesterdays and Paradise City). However, these tracks are definitely NOT from the same show, except Yesterdays.

On a side note: There are 15 tracks between the separate Deluxe versions of Illusion I & II which are NOT included on the Super Deluxe Edition so for completists that want to own all the tracks the Super Deluxe set as well as BOTH Illusion Deluxe versions would have to be purchased.
UPDATE: For who ever cares, after some research I found that the reason for this is the vocals for the majority of the Live Era album were re-recorded in studio.

Haven't listened to all of the live stuff on here, but Estranged sounds wonderful here from the Ritz show. Oh, and the remastered/remixed November Rain on there is quite different and well the orchestra is mixed higher and almost transforms it into another song.

Between the two of them there's one decent Illusion album.

This was a group that was pretty much destined to never reach its full potential. Should be as big if not bigger than Metallica. Yeah, they play stadiums too, but for the life of me I can't see how.

1991 vs 2022 differences explained by the guy who did the remix:

“The new 2022 version is the same performance as the original, and mixed faithfully to the established version, but with newly recorded orchestration replacing the sampled sounds used at the time.”
https://www.nme.com/news/music/guns-...r-rain-3343272

So, Axl & the guys are the exact same as before, only the orchestra is different. I don't think it's mixed higher, but just that it feels fuller because a 50-person orchestra will sound richer than a synthesizer playing violin sounds.

Yeah, it's weird. In the late 80s, you sort of got the sense that GNR could be our generation's Rolling Stones, and for a few years, they were. Appetite for Destruction was just this massive statement that took over rock music and heavy metal for a while and it felt like the start of something big and world-changing. Then they lost Steven Adler (not a good sign when one of the band's logos is a design with their faces -- er, skulls -- on it, and they lose one of them between their first and second albums), the Use Your Illusion albums were good, but came off as pretentious, calculated, and lazy -- and they lost Izzy not long after their release.

And then Nevermind came out...

I really enjoyed the Illusion albums at the time, but it seemed like a massive output. Each CD was essentially the length of a double album already & then you had two of them. I wonder how their career would have fared if they had rolled these out as four separate albums through the 90's? It seems after they dumped everything onto this release, the tank was empty.

On the flipside, the band was probably going to implode either way, so better to get the material out there while they could.

Yeah, if you've ever read up on the history of GNR, they were basically falling apart in 1990 when they were recording this, for various reasons.

I loved these albums on release. I wore the cassettes out and they were among my first CD purchases. I tried to listen to them recently and found them really juvenile. I still love Appetite and listen to it often still but the Illusion albums haven't aged well for me. Out of all of the big 1991 releases they are the only two that I have outgrown it seems. Of course Get In The Ring was an embarrassment back in 1991,

They always use that goofy Cherry Pie video by Warrant to show the state of rock music before Nevermind came out, but it derailed a lot of careers bigger than theirs.

The sad thing is that Warrant didn't even want to do that song or video, they knew it was fucking goofy and would hurt them but it was forced on them by their record label.
